Biomimetics Design of Tooth Root Zone at Cylindrical Gears Profile

AB  - During the last few decades, the requirements for modern machine elements in terms of size
reduction, increasing the energy efficiency, and a higher load capacity of standard and non-standard
gears have been very prevalent issues. Within these demands, the main goals are the optimization
of the gears’ tooth profiles, as well as the investigation of new tooth profile designs. The presented
design idea is based on the optimal solutions inspired by nature. Special attention is paid to the new
design of the tooth root zones of spur gears in order to decrease the stress concentration values and
increase the tooth root fatigue resistance. The finite element method is used for stress and strain
state calculations, and the particular gear pair is modeled and optimized for these purposes. For
tooth root strength analysis, the estimations are based on the theory of critical distances and the
stress gradients obtained through finite element analysis. The obtained stress gradients have shown
important improvements in the stress distribution in the transition zone optimized by biomimetics.
An analysis of the material variation influence is also performed. Based on the investigations of a
particular gear pair, a significant stress reduction of about 7% for steel gears and about 10.3% for cast iron gears is obtained for tooth roots optimized by bio-inspired design.

AB  - Composite materials have been extensively employed in the aviation industry in recent years. The application of new materials enables significant weight savings with improved mechanical characteristics. This is also very important in the field of development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). In the design phases, it is necessary to perceive all the aspects that are important for the structure and consider different load cases. The relationship between weight and strength proved to be important. This means that detailed strength analyses of each structural part are indispensable. In particular, primary load-bearing structures must sustain all types of loads without fail. Failure of the structure can affect the motion of the UAV during the mission or lead to a crash and significant losses. This paper presents the research performed on the failure analysis of a composite beam of a novel UAV. During the testing phase, under an unpredictable load condition followed by a crash landing, failure of the structure occurred on a beam element. The study was performed to determine the cause of the failure of certain layers of the composite laminate, because the previous calculation showed that it met the criteria for which it was dimensioned. Based on the telemetry data and the impact load that was registered, a complementary numerical and experimental analyses were performed to determine what happened and why. Composite test specimens were extracted from the beam and subjected to standard tensile tests, in order to determine the actual mechanical characteristics of the layered material. The paper presents in detail the comparison of the results as well as the methodology used in this research.

Life Assessment of Corroded Wire for Prestressing

AB  - The repair of structural elements for the prestressing of reinforced concrete is necessary
when existing prestressing wires are damaged or after a certain period of time. The objective of this
paper is to describe the methodology for the life assessment of corroded prestressing wires, sampled
from prestressed concrete elements after a few decades of use. The aim of the presented research was
to determine the real properties of corroded wire in terms of the evaluation of remaining load capacity
using the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD). The methodology also includes spatial 3D characterization
of corroded surfaces, determination of mechanical properties, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
of a model of wire with corrosion pits. The final goal of the presented methodology is to enable more
efficient evaluation of repair range and options for the elements of mechanical prestressing systems
within various structures. The results and conclusions indicate that the developed methodology,
based on the interdisciplinary approach and implementation of state-of-the-art methods, has a high
applicability potential for both static and fatigue fracture prediction in the case of prestressed wires.
The proposed method has a huge potential for simple and fast prediction of the life assessment of
engineering structures, particularly for damaged elements with arbitrary geometry features

Failure analysis of beam of unmanned aerial vehicle

AB  - The high level of worthiness of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), particularly in everyday life, is something that will be common thing in close future. The design solutions for UAV us subject of constant innovation, focused on the improving structure performances and weight reducing. The use of new materials. like various composites, is necessary during this process to fulfill such demanding structural design requirements. Despite the fact that such kind of composite made UAV structures are subjected to the detailed calculation procedures and experimental verifications in the design phase, the fracture and failure can occur during testing in real operation conditions. The redesign procedure is required in order to overcome the noted issues.
This paper describes failure analysis, as well as structural redesign procedure for a beam element of an unconventional UAV. The fracture analysis is based on the numerical calculations of the deformation and stress state of the element, as well as experimental investigation of material characteristics. The developed redesign solution contains modifications in material of the element, as well as the changes in the structure design of the failure zone. The Finite Element Analysis is performed and discussed for both of the element structures: original design and redesign based on the fracture analysis. The conclusions obtained by the comparison of these Finite Element Analyses show the significant structure improvements in the stress concentration zone, achieved by the proposed redesign.

Neural network model for the condition assessment of hydro turbines

AB  - During regular operation, hydro turbine elements have complex operating conditions. In order to prevent major failures, among other common preventive measures, it is necessary to make a useful model of hydro turbine. Development of this model was focused on real elements and data set of real operating history. To solve this, an integral diagnostic approach is used. Based on the real diagnostics data of the condition and data history of the hydro turbine shaft and the designed life expectancy, a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) based artificial neural network (ANN) is built. The idea with this model was to enable to life assessment of the turbine shaft in any particular moment during regular operation.
This paper describes a model for estimating the condition of the shafts of turbines of the current generator in Hydropower plant Derdap 2. The significance of this approach is that real experimental data support development of ML ANN (number of neurons and layers) topology, which is optimal for this model, training and testing. Results obtained from this model are used for decision-making about the planning time schedule of maintenance actions, as well as reducing overhaul time and direct losses.

Examination of the physical-chemical and mechanical properties of helical cylindrical compression springs preserved in the Legacy in the Nikola Tesla Museum

AB  - The results of the scientific research work and creativity of Nikola Tesla (Smiljan, 1856 - New York, 1943), a Serbian-American scientist, engineer and inventor, represent the foundation of new technical and technological breakthroughs that began at the end of the 19th century, and without        which        our        everyday        life        would         be         unthinkable. The legacy of Nikola Tesla is located in his museum in Belgrade and present unique collection composed from archive documents, different items (personal and technical items) and library (monographies,          periodical          publications          and          newspaper          clips). The number of original technical items from Tesla's legacy (295 in total) is finite and unchangeable. The collection of items from the field of mechanical engineering consists of 122 different museum artifacts from the following areas: turbo machines, tribology, speed measurement, length measurement, temperature measurement, measuring tools, accessories for technical drawing and writing, machine assemblies and elements, etc. The most numerous groups of objects consist of springs (coil-cylindrical, spiral strip), a total of 30 exhibits. Models of spiral cylindrical springs, depending on how they are loaded, are compression (8 pcs.) or tension type (14 pcs.). The aim of this paper is to present preserved models and to examine the physical-chemical and mechanical properties and contribute with additional knowledge to the Nikola Tesla legacy.

The collection of items from the field of mechanical engineering consists of 122 different museum artifacts from the following areas: turbo machines, tribology, speed measurement, length measurement, temperature measurement, measuring tools, accessories for technical drawing and writing, machine assemblies and elements, etc. The most numerous groups of objects consist of springs (coil-cylindrical, spiral strip), a total of 30 exhibits. Models of spiral cylindrical springs, depending on how they are loaded, are compression (8 pcs.) or tension type (14 pcs.). The aim of this paper is to present preserved models and to examine the physical-chemical and mechanical properties and contribute with additional knowledge to the Nikola Tesla legacy.",

stressed local zone of the material under the loaded contact region and as such is
highly nonlinear problem. This phenomenon exists in almost all real mechanical
systems with contact strains coupled with other sources of nonlinear behaviour.
The improvements of existing procedures and methods for standard calculation
of contact fatigue have a potential to give significant contribution to increase
accuracy of calculation of life assessment, reliability and efficiency of complex
mechanical systems. This paper gives the basic explanation of the Theory of
critical distances and its application on direct estimation of fatigue crack
initiation in contact zones. Analysis of contact fatigue when the contact zones
are subjected to additional nonlinearities such as geometry manufacturing
deviations, geometry microscale-damages or nonlinear material characteristics
are presented in detail. Few different real multi-nonlinear problems are used for
analysis performing. The benefits of presented approach are discussed by detail
analysis of the obtained results, and could be based on the increasing accuracy
of contact fatigue prediction considering all existing nonlinearities in loaded
contact zones of complex mechanical systems.

AB  - Hertz contact and the resulting stress-strain state arising from the contact between two elastic solids have practical application in hardness testing, wear and impact damage of engineering ceramics, the design of dental prostheses, gear teeth, ball and roller bearings and many other engineering applications. Although the common concepts for studying these problems implies that the analysis is perform taking into account that elastic solids are imperfection free, the real problems, as well as various failure analysis, underline significance in taking into account those imperfections, [1]. Imperfections in metallic materials can be non-metallic inclusions, carbides, pores and other microstructural defects, [1, 2]. This paper describes model of two cylinders in contact made by metallic material with carbides. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed in order to discuss the influence of position, orientation and dimension of carbides on Hertz stresses for two cylinders in contact. Fig.1a shows the FEA model developed for calculation the Hertz stress state for two cylinders, and Fig.2 shows the position and dimension of carbides for two of the series of modelled cases.

AB  - The basic definitions and a history of the development of biomimetics as a discipline that
considers nature-inspired design are presented in this paper. The discussion and the results of the
application of principles of nature-inspired design in machine elements design are given. The fact
that transition zones that Nature chose and designed on trees in many cases survived for more
than a hundred years, resisting on the various and variable external loads and other external
conditions, is considered. Presented case study used the nature-inspired transition shapes in the
research of innovative design and geometric optimization of transition zones of high-loaded
shafts. The comparative Finite Element Analysis is performed for a particular transition zone with
traditional engineering design, as well as with nature-inspired design. The conclusions about the
increase of load capacity that is obtained with innovative biomimetics design are discussed.

AB  - Assessing heat released only related to the formation of primary crystals provides results with a significantly higher sensitivity than a traditional assessment of undercooling value. In this work, two similar Ti5B1 master alloys (commercial and refined) are used for grain refinement of Al7Si4Cu aluminum alloy to assess narrow differences in heat release during primary crystallization. The heat released related to primary crystallization is 2.50 +/- 0.03, 3.16 +/- 0.12, and 7.92 kJ kg(-1) for samples treated with the refined master alloys, commercial master alloys, and sample solidified without grain refinement, respectively. The acquired results showed that the suggested method is more efficient in comparison with traditional metallographic or undercooling methods for the assessment of grain refining efficiency with the potential to extend the suggested approach on a wide range of metallic structures where solidification occurs by eutectic-type primary crystallization characteristics.

AB  - U radu je prikazana nova tehnologija aluminotermijskog zavarivanja (AT) prelaznih šina 49E1 na
60E1(EN 13674-1:2005.), oslonjena na potpuno nove materijale. Ona se odnosi na pešćane kalupe kod
kojih su oblik i dimenzije ulivnog sistema projektovani tako da mogu odgovoriti svim zahtevima za
postizanje zavarenih spojeva zadatog kvaliteta. Da bi ovaj zahtev bio u potpunosti ispunjen,
projektovana je, takođe, AT smeša, čijom se aktivacijom dobija termitni čelik za ispunu, sa temperaturom
izlivanja koja obezbeđuje optimalnu livkost metala, kao i viskoznost troske. U radu su zatim prikazani
rezultati ispitivanja probnih prelaznih zavarenih spojeva, shodno standardima JŽS.Z2.610 i EN 14730-
1:2012, a odnose se na utvrđivanje mehaničkih svojstava zavarenih spojeva, makrostruktirnih i
mikrostrukturnih karakteristika, homogenosti i hemijskog sastava termitnog čelika za ispunu. Dobijeni
rezultati pokazuju da je primenjena tehnologija optimalna, jer obezbeđuje upotrebu ove tehnologije u
industrijskim uslovima na železnici.

Experimental research of mechanical characteristics of railway vehicles safety coupling components

AB  - The coupling system provides a mechanical connection between European railway vehicles. Screw couplings are designed as a safety device in railway vehicles with coupling links and screw as two main components intended to break. Failure of these components is necessary when the load between vehicles is exceeded, otherwise more significant draw gear elements will fracture. The analysis of train break cases shows that the failure of the links occurs only in an approx. 6% of cases. Therefore, the links taken from exploitation after more than 30 years in operation were tested to determine their mechanical characteristics. Tensile testing was performed according to the ISO 6892-1 standard with a continual force and a minimal and maximal test speed prescribed by ISO 6892-1. The values of mechanical characteristics of coupling links are substantially improved during production after heat treatment by hardening and tempering. abstract = "The coupling system provides a mechanical connection between European railway vehicles. Screw couplings are designed as a safety device in railway vehicles with coupling links and screw as two main components intended to break. Failure of these components is necessary when the load between vehicles is exceeded, otherwise more significant draw gear elements will fracture. The analysis of train break cases shows that the failure of the links occurs only in an approx. 6% of cases. Therefore, the links taken from exploitation after more than 30 years in operation were tested to determine their mechanical characteristics. Tensile testing was performed according to the ISO 6892-1 standard with a continual force and a minimal and maximal test speed prescribed by ISO 6892-1. The values of mechanical characteristics of coupling links are substantially improved during production after heat treatment by hardening and tempering. AB  - U radu je prikazana nova tehnologija aluminotermijskog zavarivanja (AT) prelaznih šina 49E1 na 60E1(EN 13674-1:2005.), oslonjena na potpuno nove materijale. Ona se odnosi na pešćane kalupe kod kojih su oblik i dimenzije ulivnog sistema projektovani tako da mogu odgovoriti svim zahtevima za postizanje zavarenih spojeva zadatog kvaliteta. Da bi ovaj zahtev bio u potpunosti ispunjen, projektovana je, takođe, AT smeša, čijom se aktivacijom dobija termitni čelik za ispunu, sa temperaturom izlivanja koja obezbeđuje optimalnu livkost metala, kao i viskoznost troske. U radu su zatim prikazani rezultati ispitivanja probnih prelaznih zavarenih spojeva, shodno standardima JŽS.Z2.610 i EN 14730-1:2012, a odnose se na utvrđivanje mehaničkih svojstava zavarenih spojeva, makrostruktirnih i mikrostrukturnih karakteristika, homogenosti i hemijskog sastava termitnog čelika za ispunu. Dobijeni rezultati pokazuju da je primenjena tehnologija optimalna, jer obezbeđuje upotrebu ove tehnologije u industrijskim uslovima na železnici.
AB  - The paper presents a new aluminothermic (AT) welding technology of 49E1 transition rails on 60E1 (EN 13674-1: 2005), based on entirely new materials. It refers to sand molds in which the shape and dimensions of the inflow system are designed to meet all requirements for achieving welded joints of a given quality. The AT mixture was also designed to fulfill those requests; resulting liquid steel has a casting temperature that ensures optimal castability of the metal and slag viscosity. The paper presents the test results of the transients welded joints, following the standards JŽS.Z2.610 and EN 14730-1: 2012, and relates to the determination of mechanical properties of welded joints macrostructural and microstructural characteristics, homogeneity, and chemical composition of thermite steel. The obtained results show that the applied technology is optimal because it ensures the use of this technology in industrial conditions on the railway.

AB  - In the framework of Industry 4.0, new specific or improved methods for
monitoring and prediction of operational conditions of machine elements are required.
Ball bearings are among the elements with high impact on safety and reliability of
mechanical systems operation. Hence, the development of accurate methods for their
working conditions monitoring is one of the important tasks within this framework. In
this paper, the development of 3D Finite Element Model for deep groove ball bearings
with defects on ring races is described in detail and its place in the new monitoring
methods is discussed. Special attention is paid to the modeling of contact finite
elements and selection of FEA parameters for fast and secure convergence during
non-linear calculations. The stress analysis of contact zones with defects and influence
of variable defect dimensions are presented, also.

Failure analysis of ATR 72 tow bar–opportunity for re-design for inspection

AB  - The safe towing of aircraft is an important part in aviation security. Failures during the towing and parking
related operations are not so rare due to bad working circumstance, human error, etc. Tow bars are simple
but very important elements, for towing aircrafts on airports all over the world. This paper describes
failure analysis of accident during towing of regional ATR 72 aircraft. During towing of ATR 72 aircraft
sudden fracture of shear pins caused that tow tractor goes into one and airplane ATR 72 into other
direction. As a result, the airplane crashed on the empty tanker truck and severely deformed nose in this
ground damage incident. Design of failed tow bar key elements and of susceptibility to corrosion was
discussed in this paper. Failure analysis unveil the several key elements that lead to fracture of shear pins: outdated design of tow
bar, improper maintenance and non-regular towing of aircraft. Combination of reduction of load capacity
of shear pins induced by corrosion and impulse overloading caused premature fracture of the shear pins.and damage of ATR 72 aircraft. As a result of presented analysis the remedy was initiative for detail
inspection of existing tow bars and redesign or purchasing the new ones. The results are presented.

AB  - This paper contains elements of a comprehensive research devoted to the dynamic behavior of radial ball bearings in real working conditions. The general motivation for this topic comes from the requirements for high performance operation of bearings within complex mechanical systems, defined in many industrial branches during the last decades. The discussion of the fundamental postulates of the approach used for analyzing the vibration response of rolling ball bearings in order to select the optimal working conditions is given. The certain simplifications and reductions used for analyzing the radial ball bearings are explained. The developed procedure can be used for research of influence of different damages and variable operation conditions on the rolling bearings dynamics. The detail analyses of the dynamic behavior of rolling bearings are performed for particular types of radial ball bearings in two case studies: For the damaged outer raceway surface in accordance with real fatigue damage shapes and dimensions and, for variable working temperature. Obtained results are shown by comparative diagrams of vibration and phase plane portraits. Presented results could be a base for more widely research of nonlinear dynamics of radial ball bearings with different damages and for the application of phase plane analysis in order to choose the optimal operation conditions.

Tie-rods of the bucket wheel excavator slewing superstructure: A study of the eye plate stress state

AB  - Tie-rods of the bucket wheel and counterweight booms are vital parts of the bucket wheel excavator slewing superstructure. This paper is dedicated to the problem of identifying the stress state of the critical cross-section ('net section') of the eye plates on these tie-rods. It presents the results of the experimental and numerical investigations carried out on the eyebar model. The results show the appearance of a plastic deformation in the zone near the contour of the hole even when the eye is subjected to the loads within the range of the permissible loads prescribed by the standard DIN 22261-2. Plastification in the eye net section occurs across the full thickness of the plate, but it does not jeopardize the integrity of the structure. The stress value in the eye net section, calculated in accordance with the standard DIN 22261-2, is significantly lower than the actual stress values around the hole and serves only as a comparative value for the static strength proof for the eye.

AB  - An original method for validation of the number of buckets on the working device of a bucket wheel excavator based on the dynamic response of its slewing superstructure (SS) is presented. A set of 16 seemingly acceptable solutions which satisfied the rigid design restrictions, based on the preservation of the existing (a) bucket wheel drivetrain, (b) theoretical capacity, (c) characteristics of the excavated soil and (d) position of the superstructure centre of gravity (CoG), was analysed. Already on the basis of the limiting vertical and lateral accelerations of the bucket wheel centre, which represents a well-grounded indicator of its dynamic behaviour prescribed by the code
DIN 22261-2, 14 out of 16 analysed design variants have been discarded, reducing the set of possible solutions to only two – the originally-designed variant (with 17 buckets), and the variant with 20 buckets. Conclusions on the validity of these two design variants were derived on the basis of the dynamic response analysis of the referent points of the SS. The analysis of the impact of soiling on the dynamic response of the SS has shown that negative dynamic effects, observed in the preceding analysis of the originally-designed solution, increase with the amount
of the adhered material. Although the redesigned variant with 20 buckets has proven as the only suitable solution from the standpoint of dynamic behaviour of the SS, the results have to be assessed carefully due to the fact that the reduction of the mass of the bucket wheel steel structure by more than 14% leads to the appearance of unfavourable dynamic effects, even though the SS CoG position is preserved.

AB  - The main performance of involute gears operation leads to the appearance of nonlinear dynamic behavior and impact. In this chapter the influence of mild wear of the tooth flanks of gears without machine finishing and surface hardening on the vibro-impact behavior is considered. For this purpose, a new theoretical model for vibro-impact dynamics of spur gears with mild wear on tooth flanks is developed and described. The developed theoretical model is based on the main postulates of a model of the central centric collision of two fictive rolling disks with radii equal to the radii of kinematic diameters of the pinion and the wheel, as well as on a combined analytical/numerical approach used finite element analysis for the calculation of contact deformations, contact pressure, and wear on tooth flanks surfaces. A particular gear pair for earth moving machine is used for presenting the developed model. The conclusions about the influence of mild wear on the vibroimpact oscillations during running-in period are described.

AB  - Many new requirements in the field of testing of metals, emphasize traceability
and accuracy of test results as of the end goal. These requirements have hidden
context with emphasis on energy efficiency too., which is initiated by mass
productions and increasing market of end products based on steels for civil engineering
applications. The noted above move focus on improvements of existing
test methods. The key point in the verification of improvements is a statistical
analysis of test results. This paper describes one such analysis, based on results
obtained by application of new insert tool for testing of shear strength of welded
fabric for civil engineering. This paper presents an extensive series of experimental
results to verify the efficiency of the application of the new insert tool. The obtained
results justify applications of a new tool insert to reduce data scatter during testing
of welded fabric for civil engineering.

AB  - The aim of the paper is to point up the possibilities of biomimetics principles in the machine elements design. During last decades, the new requirements in machine elements design are placed in front of the experts. The optimization of machine elements is focused on the size reduction, energy efficiency increasing, as well as on the higher reliability. When it is starting to seems that the engineers are without inspiration, the disciplines that returning us to the nature as an inspiration began to occupy the focus. Using biomimetics principles as inspiration, fine optimization of present geometries of machine elements can be done, which will lead to longer and safer life of machines. The good example of solutions offered by nature, with emphasize on design of geometry can be found in the references of few authors dedicated to research in this area. Examples of well-known precise calculations and high "commercial" innovations are found everywhere around us.
