J-integral Analysis of the Simulated Heat-affected Zone of the Elevated-temperature Martensitic Steel

AB  - Due to its superior strength at high temperatures P/T91 steel is often applied in the chemical, petrochemical and fossil-fired power generation industries. The high strength is achieved by a suitable martensitic microstructure after appropriate heat treatment procedure. Welding is the most important process of joining the components in such plants, and the heat-affected zone is often the weakest part of these structures. Having in mind that the welded joint is the weakest area, it is necessary to know its properties and assess the level of its degradation. It was found that the life-limiting factor in case of P/T91 steel welded structures are the cracks located in the heat affected zones, more precisely in its intercritical region. In present paper the results of the fracture toughness measurement carried out on simulated P91 steel ICHAZ specimens produced using a weld simulator has been presented. The tests were done on two types of simulated specimens, those subjected to the subsequent PWHT and with those left untreated (without PWHT), at room temperature and 600 degrees C. For the J-integral estimation pin-loaded SEN(T) specimens were tested in plane stress conditions using the unloading compliance method of deriving a single specimen resistance curve and the eta-method.

Uticaj prsline na karakteristike zavarenog spoja pri različitim vrstama opterećenja

AB  - Primena čelika visoke čvrstoće kod projektovanja zavarenih konstrukcija zahteva podatke o svojstvima istih pri različitim uslovima opterećenja. Zahvaljujući visokom naponu tečenja debljina zida može se smanjiti u poređenju sa opštim konstrukcijskim čelicima, a shodno tome, dimenzije zavarenog spoja, potrošnja dodatnog materijala za zavarivanje i vreme za izradu zavarenih spojeva će biti minimizirani. Ovo je od značaja za opremu pod pritiskom, ali i za druge industrijske grane (kranove, bagere). Kompletna karakterizacija zavarenog spoja mora uključiti podatke za osnovni metal, ali takođe su neophodne osobine metala šava i zone uticaja toplote (ZUT), bar da bi ih uporedili sa svojstvima osnovnog metala. Ovo je od posebnog značaja zbog heterogenosti strukture u ZUT-u. .

Thanks to high yield stress the wall thickness can be reduced compared to mild structural steels, and accordingly welded joint cross-sections, welding consumables consumption and time for welded joints manufacturing will be minimized. This is of importance for pressurized equipment, but also for other industrial branches (cranes, excavator). Complete characterization of welded joint has to include data for parent metal, but also the properties for weld metal and the heat-affected-zone (HAZ) are necessary, at least in order to compare them with parent metal properties. This is of special importance because of heterogeneity structure in HAZ.

AB  - Experimental research on the behaviour of high-strength low-alloy steel ( HSLA)exposed to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) with controlled and fully reversible strain (Delta epsilon/2 = const, R epsilon =epsilon(min)/epsilon(max) = -1) has been analysed. LCF tests are performed on a series of smooth bar shaped specimens, 11 x 11 x 95 mm, parent metal (PM), welded joint (WJ) and simulated heat affected zone (SHAZ) of steel Nionikral 70 (NN-70) with semi-amplitude of controlled strain, Delta epsilon/2 = 0.40- 0.80. The results of the experimental investigation have given us important information on the understanding of fatigue behaviour of steel NN-70 and its welded joints. In this work the results of static and dynamic-, that is monotonous and fatigue behaviour of the material, are compared, which is a practical contribution to the assessment of the behaviour of PM and WJ of steel NN-70 exposed to effects of low cycle fatigue, i.e. monotonous and fatigue behaviour of the material.

AB  - High strength low-alloy steel under low cycle fatigue at a certain level of strain controlled achieve stabilized condition. During the fatigue loading stabilized hysteresis loop is determined, which typical cycle of stabilization is calculated as half number of cycles to failure. Stabilized hysteresis loop is a representative of all hysteresis and it's used to determine all of the parameters for the assessment of low cycle fatigue. This paper Shows comparison of complete strain-life curves of low cycle fatigue for two chosen stabilized hysteresis loop cycles of base metal HSLA steel marked as Nionikral 70.

Characterisation of high-carbon steel surface welded layer

AB  - In this paper microstructural and mechanical properties of high-carbon steel surface welded layer, obtained with self-shielded flux cored wire, are presented in the case of a standard rails and crossings. The testing results of tensile characteristics, hardness, toughness via instrumented Charpy pendulum, microstructural analysis and fatigue crack growth resistance of all characteristical zones are analysed in details, especially from the point of view of interaction between microstructure and properties. Obtained results indicate superior properties of repaired welded layers, due to their similarity to the new generation of bainitic steel, i.e., due to change of microstructure from original pearlitic structure to final bainitic structure. Finally, fatigue crack growth parameters have shown that deposite layer has higher resistance to the crack growth, improving overall reliability of rails and crossings.

AB  - Quality and structural integrity of welded pressure equipment are defined by The Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC). The problem is complex, due to welded joint imperfections, matching effect, heterogeneity of microstructure and material properties. Equipment can be fit for service with defects unacceptable by codes, what should be proved by fracture mechanics approach, especially for cracks in the heat-affected-zone.

AB  - in order to gain the benefits of weldable high-strength steels in pressurized equipment applications, satisfactory toughness and crack properties of the welded joint, both in the weld metal and the heat-affected-zone (HAZ), are required. Experimental investigations of toughness and crack resistance parameters through static and impact tests of a high-strength, low-alloy steel (HSLA) with a nominal yield strength of 700MPa and its welded joint, were performed on Charpy-sized specimens, V-notched and pre-cracked, of the parent metal, weld metal and HAZ. The selected electrode produced slight undermatching and enabled the welded joints to be manufactured without cold cracks. The impact energy and its parts responsible for crack initiation and propagation were determined by toughness evaluation. Crack sensitivity, defined as the ratio of the impact energy for V-notched and for pre-cracked specimens, enabled a comparison of the homogeneous microstructure of the parent metal and the weld metal, and of the heterogeneous microstructure of the heat-affected-zone (HAZ), which indicated a better crack toughness behaviour of the HAZ. The results obtained showed that the toughness and crack resistance of the weld metal were significantly lower than those of the parent metal and the HAZ. The fracture mechanics parameters, J(Ic), integral, and plane strain fracture toughness, K-Ic, as well as J resistance curves expressed the degradation less.

AB  - U ovom radu su prikazane metode za određivanje dinamičke žilavosti loma, KId Metode dinamičkog J integrala, i ekvivalenta energije su eksperimentalno potvrđene ispitivanjem čelika Č 5432 i Č 4734. Ovaj rad predstavlja doprinos u ovladavanju metodama koje definišu ponašanje materijala u dinamičkim uslovima rasta prsline. Primena ovih metoda zajedno sa ostalim metodama za određivanje parametara mehanike loma predstavlja značajan doprinos istraživanju ponašanja konstrukcijskih materijala u prisustvu prsline.
AB  - In this paper the investigation of methods for determination of dynamic fracture toughness, KId. Dynamic J-integral and equivalence energy methods are experimental confirm testing of steel Č 5432 and Č 4734. This paper presented of contribution in control methods what's to define behavior of materials in condition of dynamic crack growth. Application this all methods presented very imported contribution of investigation behavior construction materials in presence of crack.

AB  - Analiziran je uticaj sadržaja Mg u matrici i zapreminskog udela SiC čestica u metal matričnom kompozitu (MMC) na udarnu žilavost. Livena AlMg legura, sa 3%, 5% i 7% sadržaja Mg korišćena je kao metal matrice. Primenjen je sadržaj ojačavaća od 2%, 5% i 10%, sa prosečnom veličinom čestica od 30 µm. Kompozit je dobijen metodom vrtložnog livenja. Energija udara metal matričnog kompozita sa AlMg matricom smanjuje se sa porastom sadržaja SiC i smanjenjem sadržaja Mg. Najveća ukupna energija je nađena u MMC AlMg7 sa 2% SiC (14,7-17,5 J), a najmanja u MMC AlMg3 sa 10% SiC (3,7-4,1 J). Vrednosti za metal matrični kompozit su manje od vrednosti za odgovarajuću leguru za 40 do 50%.
AB  - The effect of Mg content in matrix and volume entail of SiC particles in metal matrix composite (MMC) on impact toughness is analyzed. Cast AlMg alloy, with 3%, 5% and 7% Mg content is used as metal matrix. Reinforcement content of 2%, 5% and 10%, with an average particle size of 30 µm, had been applied. Composite is obtained by whirlpool casting method. The impact energy of metal matrix composite with AlMg matrix decreases with increasing SiC content and with decreasing Mg content. The highest total energy is found in MMC AlMg7 with 2% SiC (14.7-17.5 J), and the lowest one in MMC AlMg3 with 10% SiC (3.7-4.1 J). The values for metal matrix composite are bellow that of corresponding alloy for 40 to 50% .

Epruvete sa V zarezom su ispitivane na instrumentiranoj Šarpi mašini, čime je omogućeno razdvajanje energija nastanka i rasta prsline. Faktor intenziteta napona Kc je izabran kao parametar loma. Ukupne vrednosti udarne žilavosti su pokazale da [0/90]16s, kao što je očekivano, daje najveću otpornost na udar, ali su i vrednosti za [02/90/±45/90/02]4s bile zadovoljavajuće, sa pogodnim odnosom energije širenja i energije rasta prsline. Ispitivanje modifikovane CT epruvete je dalo slične i zadovoljavajuće rezultate za faktor intenziteta napona za dva uzorka ([0/90]16s i [02/90/±45/90/02]4s), dok je za treći [±45]16s, ova vrednost niža za oko 20%. Imajući na umu druge prednosti orijentacije [02/90/±45/90/02]4s, ona se može preporučiti kao najbolja uprkos nešto nižoj udarnoj energiji.
AB  - The effect of carbon fibers orientation in a composite with epoxy matrix on the impact and fracture toughness is experimentally analyzed by testing of Charpy type V notched specimens and notched specimens of modified CT form (with sharp notch tip as replacement for fatigue pre-crack). Specimens were produced from samples with carbon fiber orientation [±45]16s, [0/90]16s, and also with combined composition [02/90-/±45/90/-02]4s. Specimens with V notch have been tested on instrumented Charpy machine, enabling to separate crack initiation and propagation energies. Stress intensity factor Kc had been selected as fracture parameter. Total impact toughness values have shown that highest impact resistance belongs to [0/90]16s, as expected, but the values for [02/90/±45/90/02]4s are also satisfactory, with convenient ratio of crack propagation to crack initiation energies. Modified CT specimen testing have shown close and satisfactory results for stress intensity factor of two samples ([0/90]16s and [02/90/±45/90/02]4s), and for third sample [±45]16s this value is about 20% lower. Having in mind other benefits with [02/90/±45/90/0-2]4s, it can be recommended as superior in spite of somewhat lower impact energy.

Imajući na umu druge prednosti orijentacije [02/90/±45/90/02]4s, ona se može preporučiti kao najbolja uprkos nešto nižoj udarnoj energiji., The effect of carbon fibers orientation in a composite with epoxy matrix on the impact and fracture toughness is experimentally analyzed by testing of Charpy type V notched specimens and notched specimens of modified CT form (with sharp notch tip as replacement for fatigue pre-crack). Specimens were produced from samples with carbon fiber orientation [±45]16s, [0/90]16s, and also with combined composition [02/90-/±45/90/-02]4s. Specimens with V notch have been tested on instrumented Charpy machine, enabling to separate crack initiation and propagation energies. Stress intensity factor Kc had been selected as fracture parameter. Total impact toughness values have shown that highest impact resistance belongs to [0/90]16s, as expected, but the values for [02/90/±45/90/02]4s are also satisfactory, with convenient ratio of crack propagation to crack initiation energies. Modified CT specimen testing have shown close and satisfactory results for stress intensity factor of two samples ([0/90]16s and [02/90/±45/90/02]4s), and for third sample [±45]16s this value is about 20% lower. Having in mind other benefits with [02/90/±45/90/0-2]4s, it can be recommended as superior in spite of somewhat lower impact energy.",
