Novel Utilization of Fly Ash for High-Temperature Mortars: Phase Composition, Microstructure and Performances Correlation

AB  - In this study, the feasibility of using fly ash to manufacture high-temperature mortars was investigated. The investigation was set to define preliminary characteristics of new types of mortars based on ordinary and/or refractory cement with fly ash addition, and to establish mutual correlation between thermally induced changes of mineral phases, microstructure, and final performances of the mortars. New mortars, made up of 21% cement (PC-CEM I 42.5R/HAC-Secar 70/71), 70% river sand, and 9% fly ash, were chemically, physically, and mechanically characterized to determine possibilities of fly ash re-utilization for high-temperature purposes. The fly ash samples, which originated from four different power plants, were mechanically activated. Mortars were heat-treated up to 1300 degrees C in a laboratory tunnel furnace with retention time 2 h. Thermal stability of crystalline phases were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA); thermally induced changes in mineral phase composition were analyzed by XRD; and microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Correlated results of DTA, XRD, and SEM analyses indicated initiation of sintering processes at approximately 1300 degrees C and formation of thermally stable minerals (rankinite, gehlenite, anorthite, cristobalite). The investigation highlights a sustainable approach of using fly ash in developing ecofriendly mortars for high-temperature application.

AB  - The aim of investigation was to find sustainable solution for coal fly ash reapplication by increasing its reactivity through mechano-activation. For obtaining complete insight into activation process an understanding of theoretical principles of activator operation is necessary. The vibratory mill was used in experiments. The characteristics of activated ash and possibility of grain inertia measurement by automatic grain counter were analyzed. Following proposed AGC operating hypothesis, energy and properties of ash grains induced by mechanical force were expressed as grain inertia change. The ash used in experiment was thoroughly analyzed by XRD and SEM methods. The final result was establishing of the upper limit of activation period.

AB  - Refractory coatings based on different refractory fillers (talc, cordierite, zircon and mullite) for application in Lost Foam casting process were investigated. Design and optimization of the coatings composition with controlled, rheological properties included, and consequently synthesis were achieved by application of different coating components, namely different suspension agents and fillers and by alteration of the coating production procedure. Morphologic and microstructural analysis of fillers was carried out by means of scanning electronic microscope. X-ray diffraction analysis by means of X-ray diffractometer was applied in determination and monitoring the phase composition changes of the refractory fillers. An analysis of the particle size and shape was carried out by means of the PC software application package OZARIA 2.5. To assess the effects of application of individual refractory coatings, a detailed investigation of structural and mechanical properties of the moldings obtained was performed. Highlight was placed on revealing and analyzing surface and volume defects present on moldings. Radiographic molding tests were carried out by means of the X-ray device SAIFORT type-S200. Attained results are essential for the synthesis of refractory coatings based on high-temperature fillers and their applications in Lost Foam casting process for manufacturing of moldings with in-advance-set properties.

AB  - The efficiency of talc mechanical activation by means of two different mechano-activators centrifugal and attrition mill is investigated in this study and the comparative analysis of the characteristics of obtained talc powders is presented. A new approach for obtaining high-grade talc concentrate with low Fe2O3 content is achieved through effect of mechanical activation of talc accompanied by hydrometallurgical process. The applied mechanical activation process conditions of ultra-centrifugal mill were defined by number of rotor revolutions, sieve mesh size, and current intensity. These operating parameters of the ultra-centrifugal mill were variable. Ultra fine grinding of talc in attrition mill (attritor) was carried out in various time intervals - from 5 to 15 min. The following technological parameters of the mechanical activation were monitored: time of mechanical activation, circumferential rotor speed, capacity of ultra-centrifugal mill, and specific energy consumption. The investigation was based on a kinetic model. The structure and behavior of activated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

AB  - Mica and talc have wide areas of application as a raw material in a number of industrial branches. Mechanically activated mica has specific applications such as: capacitors, insulators, and pearlescent pigments. Talc is widely used as either a basic raw material or as filler. This paper presents a comparative analysis of mechanically activated samples of mica and talc in ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator "Retsch ZM-1". The following mechano-activator parameters were variable: number of rotor revolutions (rpm); sieve mesh size (mu m); current intensity (A). In addition, the following parameters were monitored: duration of mechanical activation, t (min); circumferential rotor speed, v (m/s); capacity of mechano-activator, Q (kg/h); and specific energy consumption, W-e (kW h/t). It was observed that effect of mechanical activation of mica and talc increased with an increase of the load and rotor revolution of ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator. Both mica and talc were successfully treated by mechanical activation procedure. In the processing of mica, mechanical activation is suggested to be applied as a post-treatment, and in the talc processing as a pre-treatment, as the high quality talc is obtained by means of hydrometallurgical concentration method.

AB  - In this study, new refractory coatings based on synthesized cordierite for the casting applications were developed. The investigation included starting raw materials characterization, synthesis of the cordierite, design of the refractory coating as final product, and its application testing. The obtained results pointed out that coating suspension sediment stability was crucial quality parameter. Design and optimization of the coatings composition, with controlled rheological properties included, were achieved by application of different coating components, namely different suspension agents and by alteration of the coating production procedure. Cordierite, used as filler, was obtained by means of synthesis in the solid-state reaction on the basis of talc, kaolin, and alumina. The investigation showed that the application of these particular types of water/alcohol-based coatings has positive influence on surface quality and structural and mechanical properties of the castings of aluminum alloys obtained by casting into sand molds by means of evaporable models method, that is, evaporate pattern casting process.

AB  - High-temperature concrete binders in which fly ash, as environmentally harmful secondary raw material, is combined with masonry and refractory cement is a new option for reapplication of this coal combustion by-product. In this study, the design of the bonding agents was based on the fly ash from lignite coal combustion process and two types of cement: Portland cement and aluminate cement. Fly ash was applied without any further mechanical or thermal treatment. Mechanical properties of the binders were investigated and subsequently correlated with changes which occurred in the phase composition and microstructure of the agents. Scanning electron microscopy was used in investigation of microstructural changes caused by temperature. X-ray diffraction method was used in monitoring of the mineral phase changes also induced by increasing temperature. The investigations conducted on the bonding agents highlighted presence of good refractory properties and temperature-resistance, and also showed high values of compressive strength. The investigated bonding agents, thus, can be applied in refractory concretes, but also in various types of thermo-insulations.

AB  - Utilization potential of fly ash, as the main residue in the lignite coal combustion in Serbian power plants, was investigated in present study. High production of fly ash represents extreme hazard for environment. Question of storage of this waste material is disclosed. Recycling and reapplication of fly ash in construction materials industry is only economic solution for ongoing problem. Fly ash can be used as a component in cement, mortar, concrete, bricks, and tiles. In this study, characterization of three different Serbian fly ash capacities was used as base for further fly ash utilization possibilities investigation. Investigation of fly ash mineralogical components as well as chemical composition analysis was emphasized. Macroperformance was correlated to the microstructure of fly ash studied by means of XRD and SEM analysis. Furthermore, thermal stability of crystalline phases, content of trace elements, physico-chemical characteristics, and leaching toxicity were tested. Highlight was placed on the determination of the influence of the fly ash grain-size and its microstructure on the performances of the fly-ash-based products. Comparison of Serbian fly ash properties with characteristics of foreign fly ashes led to the presumption that Serbian fly ash has equal if not better characteristics and that it can be reapplied in production of high-value products manufacturing worldwide.

AB  - Disposal of the fly ash may pose a significant risk to the environment due to the leaching of hazardous pollutants. The only sustainable solution for the pollution-prevention is the reapplication of fly ash as one of the components in construction material composites. There is a risk of leaching even when fly ash is built-in the construction composites and the goal of this investigation was to prove that leaching concentrations of toxic elements is in range assigned by actual regulations. Fly ash was applied in several composits: mortar, concrete and asphalt. The leachability of the potentially toxic elements from the fly ash based products was investigated. The leaching behavior and potential environmental impact of the 11 potentially hazardous elements was tracked: Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Hg, As, Ba, Sb and Se. A detailed study of physico-chemical characteristics of the fly ash is included. The overall results showed that most of the elements are more readily leachable from the fly ash in comparison with the fly ash based composites.

AB  - This paper presents results of the research of micronization grinding of dry mica in a planetary ball mill. Investigation was conducted in order to improve the quality and to obtain clearly defined properties and characteristics of mica powder. The micronization grinding of dry mica was performed in four time periods: 30, 60, 120, and 360 minutes. The micronized powder was investigated by means of differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses, analysis of the degree of micronization, the specific surface area analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The achieved results pointed out that dry mica micronization grinding which exceeds 360 minutes is recommended for this type of mill. However, it was also shown that the micronized mica produced by means of planetary ball mill after extra long periods of micronization grinding can pass into amorphous state.

Application of chromite in the production of refractory coatings

AB  - This work investigated the possibility of developing new chromite-based refractory coatings for hot metal casting applications. The coating composition and rheological properties were optimized by careful choice of binding agents and addition of a suspension maintenance agent in the coating. Different solvents (water and isopropyl alcohol) and casting methods were used in the tests. Chromite was used as refractory filler in both the water- And alcohol-based coating compositions. The chromite was examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The chromite shape and grain size were analysed visually with the aid of the OZARIA 2.5 PC image analysis package. Test samples were cast using sand moulds and by the method of expandable patterns using a polymer model, also known as the "lost foam" casting process. The investigation demonstrated that water- And alcohol-based coatings have positive influence on the surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of alloy castings made with both casting processes.

AB  - Various possibilities for developing new mullite-based refractory linings that can be applied in a casting process were investigated and are presented in this paper. An optimization of the refractory-lining composition design with the controlled rheological properties was achieved by applying different lining components and altering the lining-production procedure. Mullite was used as a high-temperature filler. A mullite sample was tested with the following methods: X-ray diffraction analysis, differential thermal analysis and scanning-electron microscopy. The particle shape and particle size were analyzed with the program package for an image analysis called OZARIA 2.5. It was proved that an application of this type of lining has a positive effect on the surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of the castings of Fe-C alloys obtained by casting into sand molds, according to the method of expandable patterns (the EPC casting process).

AB  - The results of the investigation of the influence of different modifiers (sodium, phosphorus, antimony and strontium) on the quality of AlSi12CuMgNi and AlSi18CuMgNi alloys, which are used for the production of pistons, are presented in this paper. The effects of these elements were investigated with reference to their mechanical and structural properties measured at ambient and elevated temperatures and service performance of the piston. Since strontium and antimony modified alloys are not considered as standardised piston alloys, the research results were compared with the results of standard phosphor and sodium modified alloys normally used at globally renowned piston manufacturer: Mahle, KS.

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of various process parameters on the microstructure of composite materials based on alloys All 8Wt%Si with the addition of 10Wt%SiC. The effect of stirring speed (1000 and 1500 rpm), stirring time 15 min and casting temperature 565 degrees C on the structural and mechanical properties are discussed. It was found that applying the stirring speed of 1500 rpm in semisolid state the best distribution of SiC particles in the matrix was achieved, which gave satisfying mechanical properties. In order to evaluate the quality of obtained composites and their possible application in the practice, tests were carried out under conditions of cavitation. Cavitation damage to the composite samples was determined using modified vibratory cavitation equipment. Mass loss and surface analysis of composite samples during the experiment were used as an indicator the level of cavitation damage. The results showed very good cavitation resistance which gives the possibility of using these materials in condition where cavitation resistance is needed.

AB  - Hypereutectic Al-18wt%Si alloy was obtained by conventional and rheocasting procedure at cooling rate 0.16 +/- 0.05 degrees Cs-1. Samples of rheocasted alloy were obtained at two stirring speeds 1000 and 1500 rpm. Tests showed that two major changes of microstructural properties of rheocasting alloy, in comparison with conventional alloy, are change of dendrite morphology into nondendrite one and change of primary phases size (alpha-Al and Si). Both changes of primary particles were monitored in area near the stirrer and at a small distance from the crucible wall. Test showed that sizes of primary, alpha-Al particles decreased with stirring speed increment, while roundness of particles increased with stirring speed increment. Stirring speed change led to different degree of primary Si particles agglomeration. At stirring speed 1000 rpm, Si particles are uniformly distributed, while at speed 1500 rpm, a tendency to form clusters is more expressed. Test results were discussed on basis of utilizing fragmentation-agglomeration mechanism of primary phase evolution in a semi-solid melt, which may contribute to explanation of semi-solid structure development.

Evalution of concretes with standard and recycled raw materials for high temperature application

AB  - Concrete undergoing thermal treatment before and during life-service can be applied as building material for thermal insulation in high-temperature plants. When such concretes are designed with secondary raw materials they show satisfying performances. Sintering and microstructural changes occur within concrete with increasing temperature. Change progression can be monitored by measuring compressive strength and porosity with destructive and non-destructive tests (ultrasonic pulse velocity technique, image analysis). Experiment has been performed on standard, corundum concrete and recycled, bauxite concrete. Samples were thermally treated from 110 to 1500 degrees C. Destructive tests were used in compressive strength and porosity investigation. Non-destructive tests were performed in order to compare results. Creep testing was conducted to prove sintering process. Results showed that recycled concrete has equal properties as standard concrete.

AB  - Leteći pepeo koji je deponovan na otvorenom predstavlja veliki rizik za prirodno okruženje. Održivo rešenje za sprečavanje zagađenja jeste primena letećeg pepela u građevinskim materijalima. Građevinski kompoziti - visokotemperaturna veziva, u kojima je leteći pepeo kombinovan s vatrostalnim komponentama, jesu nova mogućnost za reaplikaciju ovog otpadnog materijala. U ovom istraživanju, ispitivano vezivo dobijeno je na bazi letećeg pepela u kombinaciji s visokoaluminatnim cementom. Leteći pepeo je prethodno bio podvrgnut mehaničkoj aktivaciji. Analiza mineralnih faza pomoću XRD metode naglašena je zbog promena koje u materijalu nastaju s povećanjem temperature. Procesi koji se dešavaju u kompozitu u toku termičkog tretmana od 20 do 1100 oC identifikovani su DTA metodom. Analizirano je luženje i potencijalni uticaj na prirodnu sredinu. Ispitivani kompozit na bazi pepela i cementa pokazao je visoke fizičko-mehaničke performanse i dobra termoizolaciona svojstva. Sveukupni rezultati pokazali su da primena letećeg pepela za dobijanje visokotemperaturnih veziva predstavlja održivo rešenje za problem odlaganja i reciklaže ovog opasnog otpadnog materijala.
AB  - The fly ash disposal on open landfills poses significant risk to the environment. Sustainable solution for the pollution-prevention is reuse of fly ash in building materials. Building composites - high temperature bonding agents, in which fly ash is combined with refractory components is new option for reapplication of this waste material. In this study, investigated bonding agent was based on fly ash mixed with high-aluminate cement. Fly ash previously underwent mechanical activation. Mineral phase analysis of the composite by means of XRD was accented due to the changes occurring with increasing temperature. Processes taking place during composite thermal treatment from 20 up to 1100 oC were identified by means of DTA method. The leaching behaviour and potential environmental impact of hazardous elements were analyzed. Investigated fly ash-cement composite proved to have high physical and mechanical performances, but also good thermoinsulation characteristics. The overall results showed that application of the fly ash in high-temperature bonding agents is sustainable solution for managing this environmentally hazardous waste material.

AB  - Najčešći uzročnici zagađenja životne sredine su emisije uzrokovane različitim tehnološkim procesima koji se odvijaju u termoelektranama. Velika produkcija elektrofilterskog pepela, koji je glavni ostatak pri sagorevanju uglja, predstavlja ogroman rizik i opasnost za životnu sredinu. Zagađenje vazduha je poprimilo tolike razmere da se ovom problemu obraća specijalna pažnja i sa tim u vezi uvode mnoge regulative. Cilj legislacije je da se smanji opasna emisija u atmosferu, a to se postiže uvođenjem standarda vezanih za kvalitet vazduha i maksimume emisije raznih zagađujućih čestica. Pored uvođenja regulative, moguće rešenje za problem zagađenja i njegovog smanjenja jeste reaplikacija letećeg pepela u industriji građevinskih materijala. Elektrofilterski pepeo se može upotrebiti kao komponenta pri proizvodnji cementa, maltera, betona, opeke, pločica, asfalta. Korišćenje elektrofilterskog pepela je održivo rešenje za očuvanje prirodnih resursa i zaštitu životne sredine, ali i osnova za dizajniranje novih građevinskih materijala na principu reciklaže nusprodukata.
AB  - Most frequent environmental pollution sources are emissions caused by technological processes taking place at power-plants. High production of fly ash, the main residue in coal combustion, represents extreme hazard for the environment. Air pollution is taking proportions that require special attention, thus certain regulations are being imposed. The goal of the legislation is to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere by imposing standards for air quality and maximum emissions from various sources. Besides regulations, option of reapplication of fly ash in building materials industry is another solution for on-going problem. Fly ash can be used as component in cement, mortar, concrete, bricks, tiles, asphalt. Using produced fly ash capacities is sustainable solution for saving natural resources and environmental protection, but also a basis for designing new building materials from recycled nusproducts.

abstract = "Najčešći uzročnici zagađenja životne sredine su emisije uzrokovane različitim tehnološkim procesima koji se odvijaju u termoelektranama. Velika produkcija elektrofilterskog pepela, koji je glavni ostatak pri sagorevanju uglja, predstavlja ogroman rizik i opasnost za životnu sredinu. Zagađenje vazduha je poprimilo tolike razmere da se ovom problemu obraća specijalna pažnja i sa tim u vezi uvode mnoge regulative. Cilj legislacije je da se smanji opasna emisija u atmosferu, a to se postiže uvođenjem standarda vezanih za kvalitet vazduha i maksimume emisije raznih zagađujućih čestica. Pored uvođenja regulative, moguće rešenje za problem zagađenja i njegovog smanjenja jeste reaplikacija letećeg pepela u industriji građevinskih materijala. Elektrofilterski pepeo se može upotrebiti kao komponenta pri proizvodnji cementa, maltera, betona, opeke, pločica, asfalta. Korišćenje elektrofilterskog pepela je održivo rešenje za očuvanje prirodnih resursa i zaštitu životne sredine, ali i osnova za dizajniranje novih građevinskih materijala na principu reciklaže nusprodukata., Most frequent environmental pollution sources are emissions caused by technological processes taking place at power-plants. High production of fly ash, the main residue in coal combustion, represents extreme hazard for the environment. Air pollution is taking proportions that require special attention, thus certain regulations are being imposed. The goal of the legislation is to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere by imposing standards for air quality and maximum emissions from various sources. Besides regulations, option of reapplication of fly ash in building materials industry is another solution for on-going problem. Fly ash can be used as component in cement, mortar, concrete, bricks, tiles, asphalt. Using produced fly ash capacities is sustainable solution for saving natural resources and environmental protection, but also a basis for designing new building materials from recycled nusproducts.",

Takođe, opasnost od izluživanja je prisutna čak i kada je leteći pepeo ugrađen u konstukcioni kompozit. Leteći pepeli sa različitih deponija su upotrebljeni za spravljanje uzoraka različitih kompozita (malter, beton ili opeka) pri čemu na pepelu nije sproveden nikakav fizički ili termički pred-tretman. Ispitivano je luženje potencijalno toksičnih elemenata prisutnih u proizvodima na bazi letećeg pepela. Praćeno je izluživanje i mogući uticaj na prirodnu sredinu 11 potencijalno opasnih elemenata: Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Hg, As, Ba, Sb i Se. Sprovedeno je detaljno istraživanje fizičko-hemijskih svojstava letećeg pepela, sa posebnim naglaskom na ispitivanju hemijskog sastava i prisutnosti elemenata u tragovima. Fizičko-hemijska svojstva pepela su ispitivana sledećim metodama: X-ray fluorescenicija, difrakciona termička analiza i X-ray difrakciona metoda. Skenirajući elektronski mikroskop je primenjen u mikrostukturnoj analizi. Rezultati su pokazali da se većina elemenata lakše izlužuje iz pepela nego kompozita spravljenih na bazi pepela. Izluživanje svih ispitivanih toksičnih elemenata je bilo u dozvoljenim granicama što znači da se ispitivani leteći pepeo može upotrebiti u proizvodnji konstrukcionih materijala.
AB  - The disposal of fly ash generated in coal based power-plants may pose a significant risk to the environment due to the possible leaching of hazardous pollutants, such as toxic metals. Also, there is a risk of leaching even when fly ash is built in the construction composites. Fly ashes from various landfills were applied in several composite samples (mortar, concrete and brick) without any physical or thermal pre-treatment. The leachability of the potentially toxic pollutants from the fly ash based products was investigated. The leaching behaviour and potential environmental impact of 11 potentially hazardous elements was tracked: Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Hg, As, Ba, Sb and Se. A detailed study of physico-chemical characteristics of the fly ash, with an accent on trace elements and the chemical composition investigation is included. Physicochemical properties of fly ash were investigated by means of X-ray fluorescence, differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction methods. Scanning electron microscopy was used in microstructure analysis. The results show that most of the elements are more easily leachable from the fly ash in comparison to the fly ash based composites. The leaching of investigated pollutants is within allowed range thus investigated fly ashes can be reused in construction materials production.

AB  - Količina letećeg pepela koji se proizvodi i koja će biti proizvedena u godinama koje dolaze zahteva razvoj novih metoda recikliranja u kojima će biti upotrebljene značajne količine ovog otpadnog materijala. Mogućnost visoko-temperaturne aplikacije (termoizolacioni i vatrostalni materijali) ukazuje na novu mogućnost za primenu letećeg pepela. Za takvu primenu leteći pepeo mora da zadovolji visoke mehaničke i termičke kriterijume. Jedan od načina da se to postigne je mehanička aktivacija letećeg pepela. U ovom radu prikazani su rezultati mehaničke aktivacije pepela iz dve različite termo-elektrane pomoću planetarnog mlina. Aktivirani pepeli su mešani sa dva veziva: portland cementom i visoko-aluminatnim cementom. Akcenat je na analizi fizičko-hemijskih svojstava i mineroloških faza zbog promena koje se dešavaju u kompozitima usled mehaničke aktivacije pepela i sinterovanja. Makro svojstva kompozita su povezana sa mikrostrukturom ispitivanom pomoću SEM analize i Rendgenske difrakcije. Termijska stabilnost kristalnih faza ispitivana je pomoću DTA. Akcenat je na utvrđivanju korelacija između mehaničke aktivacije letećeg pepela i mikrostrukture kompozita na jednoj i svojstava sinterovanog kompozita na drugoj strani.
AB  - Amount of fly ash which is and yet to be generated in the coming years highlights the necessity of developing new methods of the recycling where this waste can be reused in significant quantity. A new possibility for fly ash utilization is in high-temperature application (thermal insulators or/and refractory material products). As such, fly ash has to adequately answer the mechanical and thermal stability criteria. One of the ways of achieving it is by applying mechanical activation procedure on fly ash. In present study, fly ashes from two different power plants were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. Mechanically treated fly ashes were cemented with two different binders: standard Portland cement and high-aluminates cement. Physico-chemical analysis and investigation of mineralogical components of composites are emphasized, due to the changes occurred in fly ash during mechanical activation and sintering of composites. Macro-performance of the composites was correlated to the microstructure of fly ash studied by means of XRD and SEM analysis. Thermal stability of crystalline phases was investigated with DTA. Highlight was placed on determination of relationship between mechanically activated fly ash and obtained composites microstructure on one side and behavior of sintered composites on the other side.

Dehydration investigations of a refractory concrete using DTA method

AB  - The base mix refractory concrete is corundum-based, containing corundum as refractory aggregate and CAC as hydraulic binder, with a spinel as an additive. The authors investigated the dehydration reactions which occur from the moment when water is added (at the beginning of components mixing), to the moment when installed refractory concrete lining is put into the service. Sintering process kinetic of low-cement content refractory concrete was investigated by means of differential thermal analysis at four different heating rates (5, 10, 20, and 30 A degrees C/min). Thus, temperature was increased from 20 to 1100 A degrees C. It was noticed that first dehydration step occurs at lower temperatures, indicating at a desorption of physically adsorbed and interlayer water molecules. Second dehydration step, at higher temperatures is due to dehydroxylation of the lattices and decomposition of the interlayer anions.

AB  - In this work, a possibility to develop new ceramic coats based corundum for casting applications has been examined. Optimization of coating composition with controlled rheological properties was attained by applying different coating components, and by alteration of coating production procedure. As filler, corundum powder with particle size of 20x10(-6) m and 40x10(-6) m was used. The corundum sample was tested by the following methods: X-ray diffraction analysis and with polarized microscope. The shape and grain size were analyzed by the program package OZARIA 2.5. It was shown that application of this type of water-alcohol-based coating had a positive influence on surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of the castings of Fe-C and Al alloys obtained by casting into sand molds, according to the method of expandable patterns (EPC process).

AB  - In this work, a possibility to develop new chromite-based refractory linings for casting applications has been examined. Lining composition optimization with the controlled reologic properties was achieved by applying different lining components and by alteration of lining production procedure. As filler, chromite was used. The chromite sample was tested by the following methods: X-ray diffraction analysis, diffraction thermal analysis and SEM. The shape and grain size were analyzed by the program package OZARIA 2.5. It was shown that application of this type of water-alcohol-based lining had a positive influence on surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of the castings of Fe-C alloys obtained by casting into sand molds, according to the method of expandable patterns (Lost foam casting process).

AB  - Konstrukcioni kompoziti - termo-izolaciona i/ili visoko-temperaturna veziva u kojima je leteći pepeo, kao potencijalno štetna materija za okolinu, kombinovan sa običnim i vatrostalnim cementom predstavlja jednu sasvim novu mogućnost za reaplikaciju ovog otpadnog materijala. U ovoj studiji, ispitivana su veziva spravljena na bazi dve vrste letećeg pepela dobijenog procesom sagorevanja uglja i dve vrste cementa - obični Portland cement i visoko-aluminatni cement. Promena u mineralnom sastavu kompozita uslovljena povećanjem temperature je analizirana pomoću XRD metode. Mikrostrukturne promene ispitivanih kompozita su utvrđene na osnovu rezultata skening-elektronske mikroskopije (SEM). Makro performanse - mehanička svojstva ispitivanih veziva su povezana sa promenama koje se dešavaju u mikrostrukturi materijala. Ispitivana veziva imaju odlične vrednosti pritisne čvrsoće, a SEM i XRD analiza je ukazala i na potencijalno dobra termo-izolaciona i vatrostalna svojstva ovih materijala.
AB  - Building composites - thermo-insulating and/or high-temperature resistant bonding agents in which fly ash, as potentially environmentally harmful waste material, is combined with ordinary and refractory cement is new option for reapplication of this waste material. In this study, investigated bonding agents were based on two types of fly ashes from coal combustion process and cements - ordinary Portland cement and highaluminate cement. Change of mineral phase composition of the composites with increasing temperature was analyzed by means of XRD method. Microstructural changes within investigated composites were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Macro-performance - mechanical properties of the investigated bonding agents was finally correlated with its microstructure. The investigated bonding agents showed excellent compressive strength, while SEM and XRD analysis indicated its valuable refractory and thermo-insulation properties.

AB  - Analiza i određivanje svojstava betona u ovom radu izvršeni su pomoću nedestruktivnih metoda: metode brzine ultrazvuka i metode analize slike. Cilj istraživanja je bio da se utvrdi veza između procesa sinterovanja i konačnih performansi betona na bazi korundnog agregata. Ispitivana su dva tipa betona otporna na visoke temperature:beton (C1) koji je spravljen na bazi visoko-aluminatnog cementa i korunda, i beton (C2) baziran na istim polaznim materijalima i dodatkom elektrofilterskog pepela koji je potencijalno opasna materija za životnu sredinu, ali ujedno i vrlo korisna sekundarna sirovina. Pritisna čvrstoća je ispitivana na sobnoj i na povišenim temperaturama (110, 300, 500, 800, 1000, 1300 i 1500 ºC) pomoću metode brzine ultrazvuka. Nivo površinske poroznosti na sobnoj temperaturi i nakon svakog termičkog tretmana je ispitan pomoću Image Pro Plus - programa za analizu slike. Rezultati nedestruktivnih metoda su zatim upoređeni sa rezultatima standardnih laboratorijskih metoda. Nedestruktivne metode su se pokazale kao pouzdane u karakterizaciji mikrostrukturnih defekata i optimizaciji mešavine viskotemperaturnog betona za konkretnu primenu.
AB  - The analyses of the concrete properties performed in this study were conducted by means of the nondestructive methods: ultrasonic pulse velocity technique and image analysis. The goal of the investigation was to establish mutual correlation between the sintering process and the final performances of the concretes based on corundum aggregate. Two types of high-temperature resistant concrete were investigated: concrete (C1) based on high aluminates cement and corundum, and concrete (C2) based on the same starting materials and the addition of fly ash, which can be considered as potentially harmful waste material for the environment but at the other side as useful secondary raw material. The mechanical strength of concretes was investigated at ambient temperature and at elevated temperatures (110, 300, 500, 800, 1000, 1300 and 1500 ºC) by means of ultrasonic pulse velocity technique. The level of the superficial porosity, present at ambient temperature as well as after thermal treatments, was investigated using Image Pro Plus - program for image analysis. Non-destructive measurements were afterwards compared with results of the standard laboratory procedures. Nondestructive methods proved to be reliable means for the characterization of micro-structural defects and the optimization of high-temperature concrete design for an application. .
