What to expect from heavy clay?

AB  - The need of testing the quality of brickclay arises in all brick factories, with the opening of new deposits. The analyses are both time and economically consuming, so the aim of this study was to shorten the procedure using the already known data. This study was focused on determining the usability of heavy clays, when only the raw material major elements chemical composition is determined. The effects of chemical composition, firing temperature, and several shape formats of laboratory samples on the final properties were investigated. Chemical composition of major elements was determined on the basis of classical silicate analysis. Firing was conducted in an oxidizing atmosphere, while maintaining all other experimental conditions constant, except the final temperature. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to determinate groups of samples according to similarity of chemical composition. Prediction of compressive strength (CS) and water absorption (WA) was done by developing five artificial neural networks (ANN). The average regression coefficients r(2) were used to explore the confidence level of the models. Developed models were able to predict CS and WA in a wide range of chemical composition and temperature treatment data, and the highest average r(2) of 0.923 for CS was obtained, while r(2) for WA was 0.958. The wide range of processing variables was considered in the model formulation, and its easy implementation in a spreadsheet using a set of equations makes it very useful and practical for CS and WA prediction. As it is known from literature, all the parameters entered this analysis are dependent on each other, but their mutual relationship was not quantified yet. Most importantly-the developed neural networks can be used on a global scale.

Influence of increased temperature on clay fast drying process

AB  - In this paper are presented testing results during process of fast drying at conditions of increased temperature. Three different masonry raw materials were examined using recircular laboratory dryer with air recirculation. It is concluded that samples containing more clay minerals and having better bind qualities are appropriate for increased temperature fast drying appliance. Raw materials which do not belong to the mentioned group can not be used in these processes, even in the case of slower drying regime, although their both physical and mechanical (technological) characteristics do not refer to such behavior.

AB  - U ovom radu je ispitana primenljivost dva konvencionalna matematička modela (model tankog sloja i Tomas&Skansi model) kinetike konvektivnog sušenja, uzorka oblika pločice. Ispitivanje je izvršeno u laboratorijskoj recirkulacionoj sušnici u temperaturnom opsegu od 40 do 70ºC. Parametri modela su dobijeni aproksimacijom eksperimentalnih rezultata. Takođe su analizirani uticaji uslova sušenja na parametre matematičkih modela.
AB  - In this work, were examined the applicability of two conventional mathematical model (thinlayer equation and Tomas&Skansi model) for convective drying of clay slab. The research was made in laboratory dryer for temperature 40 to 70ºC. Parameters of the selected mathematical models are estimated by fitting them to experimental data. The influences of process conditions on model parameters were also analyzed.

AB  - Kvalitet opekarskih sirovina u Srbiji varira u širokom opsegu u pogledu hemijskih, mineraloških, granulometrijskih i keramičko-tehnoloških karakteristika. Opekarske sirovine se mogu razvrstati u nekoliko osnovnih tipova i svaki tip ima odgovarajuće prednosti i ograničenja u primeni za proizvodnju određenih proizvoda i asortimana. U ovom radu daju se karakteristike lesnih sedimenata. Analiziran je uticaj kvaliteta lesnih sedimanata na kvalitet opekarskih proizvoda i na tehnološke parametre procesa proizvodnje.
AB  - The quality of the brick raw materials in Serbia varies due theirs chemical, mineralogical, grain size characteristics, as well as technological properties. Brick raw materials may be classified in a few main types. For their application in the production of a certain product and assortment very main type has some advantages and limits. In this work we presents characteristics of loess sediments and their influence on production process and quality of the brick product.

AB  - Pri površinskoj eksploataciji uglja u PK 'Kostolac' odlažu se velike količine pratećih mineralnih sirovina: les, lesoidne gline, plastične gline, pesak i ugljene prašine. Sagorevanjem uglja u termoelektrani kao tehnogena sirovina se pojavljuje i elektrofilterski pepeo. U ovom radu prikazani su laboratorijski rezultati istraživanja u cilju definisanja optimalne sirovinske mešavine za proizvodnju poroziranih šupljih blokova od gline. Takvi proizvodi imaju malu zapreminsku masu i bolja termoizolaciona svojstva, a u samom postupku pečenja se ostvaruju odgovarajuće uštede u energentima. Na taj način, dobio bi se kvalitetan proizvod na bazi otpadnih materijala, čime bi se smanjilo i ekološko zagađivanje čovekove okoline.
AB  - Surface exploitation of coal in deposit 'Kostolac', form a large amount of secondary mineral raw materials: loess, loess clay, plastic clay, sand and coal dust. Coal burning in thermoelectric power plant made fly ash, a waste raw material. The paper describes the result of laboratory test with aim to define optimum raw material composites for production porous hollow clay blocks. Porous block have less volume mass, better thermo insulation properties, and in the firing process saving of emergent have been achieved. In such way, we get a good quality building product from waste materials, and it would reduce ecology pollution of human surrounds.
