AB - Sustainable preservation of historic buildings is a long-term process that begins with the analysis of all data related to their creation and further duration and ends with the proposal of measures to preserve their current condition and prevent future damage. In accordance with this, the most important goal of the project Mortar Design for Conservation - Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after - MoDeCo2000, was set. Data obtained from the archaeological, architectural, and geological context research with the thorough laboratory testing of sampled Roman mortars along the river Danube in Serbia was used to create valuable proposals for the design of compatible mortar mixtures that could be used for the conservation of the structures in the investigated area.

AB - Although, the salt crystallization is one of the most common causes of the deterioration of lime-based mortars, testing of their resistance to the soluble salt action has not yet been standardized. The problems following the development of the globally accepted testing method are, among others: defining the type of mortar samples, ways of samples’ contamination, the type and the concentration of the salt solutions used, environmental conditions during testing, determination of the damage development and the durability assessment. Another task of the testing method is to explain and connect the processes developing in the materials when they are applied in laboratory and real conditions. In this paper, soluble salt resistance testing of lime mortars on the composite samples is presented. The main focus of the paper is on the determination of the salt distribution in this type of samples after the five wetting and drying cycles. Samples consisted of two lime rendering layers (inner – 1/3 and outer – 1/1), both prepared according to the experiences found in the literature for these types of lime mortars when applied on historical structures, placed on the natural stone bases. They were cured in laboratory conditions for 90 days, before drying and exposing to soluble salts action. Two types of 10% salt solutions were used for the test: sodium-chloride and sodium-sulfate. Salt contamination was performed by capillary action only in the first cycle, while in the other cycles samples were wetted by deionized water. After the finalization of the cycles, the detached pieces of mortar and efflorescence were removed from the samples. One of the samples from both groups were then cut in two halves, from which one was used for X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and another for Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (SEM – EDX) characterization. For the XRF analysis samples were divided into four layers, and then crushed and sieved through 0.5 mm sieve before testing. For the SEM-EDX analysis the polished thick cross sections were prepared. The paper presents the results of these two analyses, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of their application for this purpose. Mineralogical analysis of the samples was performed using XRD analysis. It was shown that XRF analysis provides more precise quantification of the elements within one sample, while SEM-EDX analysis gives possibilities for testing of layers with smaller depth within one cross – section.

AB - During the MoDeCo2000 scientific and research project on mortars used in the territory of the Roman Danube Limes in Serbia, the biggest challenge was the quest for the provenance of raw materials. The area where Viminacium, the largest city in the province of Moesia Superior developed, with millennial continuity of land use and settlement, was selected as research case study and is presented in this research. People throughout history have always used what they had at hand, and the building remains were not only reused but also recycled for new constructions. Thus, the building material of Roman Viminacium has survived in the landscape through the in situ preserved remains of Roman buildings, as well as in the structures from the later periods, up to today. To the best of our knowledge, the use of natural sediments baked during the self-combustion or combustion of underneath layers (coal in our case) for the purpose of construction was extremely rare in the Roman Empire. In this study, we follow the presence of this type of material precisely in Viminacium construction, naming it natural brick, while focusing on its potential use in lime mortars whose production was perfected in the Roman period and has never been surpassed afterward. Archaeological contexts in which this material was found have been studied, along with simultaneous work in the laboratory and in the field during the research and experimental use of the natural brick in lime mortars. We sought to determine whether this material could have been recognised by Romans in Viminacium as a potential valuable pozzolanic component of mortar, along with or instead of fired brick, being locally available and recyclable. The final confirmation of its pozzolanic features and later discussion open completely new directions for the future research of Viminacium lime mortars.

AB - Recipes for compatible mortars for conservation must be based on raw materials whose presence was determined during the characterisation of historical mortars used on buildings on which we perform renewal or repairs. Additional materials are often used that improve the resistance of conservation mortars to various influences, while all the time ensuring that they do not have any negative effects on any part of the structure.

AB - Project Mortar Design for Conservation - Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after (MoDeCo2000) deals with mortars used from the 1st to the 6th century AD along the part of the Danube frontier that is situated in the territory of today's Serbia and whose monuments form the UNESCO tentative list “Frontier of the Roman Empire - Danube Limes in Serbia”. The mentioned territory was a provincial area in the Roman period, and the construction activities that happened in this part of the empire were not particularly interesting to the international scientific community dealing with Roman architecture. The aim of this project is to gain knowledge of ancient mortar technology in this area, to allow conclusions to be made about building activities, the exploitation and use of raw materials, as well as the everyday life of the people on the frontier. After interpreting the results obtained in laboratories of testing historical materials, the project is making compatible mixtures of mortars for the future conservation of the Limes monuments, using local raw materials, but also improving the properties of these mortars with different additions.

AB - Geological building materials have always played a very important role in the construction of all types of buildings. They were among the first mineral raw materials exploited, processed, and used by man (Prikril et al., 2016). In most cases, these are raw materials of a local character, cheap, and easily available. Accordingly, geological building materials used to make Roman mortars, known for their enviable mechanical properties and durability, played a very important role in the area of the Danube Limes in Serbia. Geologically, this area is built of petrologically different rocks of different geological ages. The rocks formed from the Palaeozoic to the Quaternary contain all the basic geological building materials: sand and gravel, stone, clay, etc.

AB - The mortars have been always one of the most interesting topics for the researchers of Roman building constructions. The knowledge on this complex building material used in Roman architecture is mostly based on the research of the monumental structures in the territory of today Italy. However, many mortar examinations were executed by the researchers of provincial Roman archaeology as well, who tried to find evidence of the quality of building activities in the provinces. The territory of today's Serbia, except for the existence of scarce studies, was never in the research focus. Even the monumental bridge over the Danube, built at the beginning of the 2nd century that made Trajan’s conquest of Dacia possible, was not researched thoroughly enough when we speak of its building materials. During the last few years, the interest in the Roman buildings at the Danube territory has grown. Mortar Design for Conservation – Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after (MoDeCo2000) project is funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia. Its aim is to investigate the mortars used in Roman buildings along the former Danube Limes in Serbia, as well as to offer mortar recipes for building conservation practice.

AB - Carbonate-silica veins and masses in Vučkovica locality in central Serbia, classified as Kraubath type deposit, despite their thickness, are not economically significant as magnesite deposit due to silica content well above 0.3%. What makes this mineralisation economically insignificant as magnesite deposit – heavy silification of magnesite – is what enables its use as a gemstone. The regional hydrothermal activity along deep faults of the Sava-Vardar zone of central Serbia had caused the alteration of serpentinite and formation of carbonate-silica mineralisation. Unlike other deposits of the same type in this ophiolite belt, here the depth of the erosional level provides an opportunity to explore previously unknown features of these mineralisations, such as veins' trending, dip direction, dip angle and thickness, and somewhat different relationships between carbonate and silica constituents – namely predominance of magnesite with minor content of green dolomite and chalcedony.
X-ray diffraction analyses have shown that carbonate minerals present are predominantly magnesite with minor dolomite, and that silica is fully crystallised despite its colloform structure. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescent (EDXRF) analysis indicated the presence of significant content of Nickel, which can cause the green colour of dolomite. Optical microscopy has shown that the precipitation process is carried out continuously between cryptocrystalline magnesite and crystalline dolomite, and that silica crystallite (fibre) size varies between cryptocrystalline and microcrystalline.
As a gemstone deposit, Vučkovica can be considered small and with complicated internal setting, but with significant depth span, as is typical for Kraubath type deposits. Present gemstone types are considered "semi-precious", of low to moderate economic value, but with very pleasing aesthetic properties.

AB - The Ropočevo breccia, a dimension stone highly prized in 20th century, has been examined by numerous prominent geologists of the time. It is revisited by researchers still intrigued by its perplexing provenance. Its position as a rigid exotic block of hard and completely metamorphosed carbonate breccia within the moderately lithified Upper Cretaceous flysch sequence remains unsolved due to absence of its source. Large bodies of a monomictic breccia suggest a relatively monotonous protolith carbonate sequence of significant thickness, such as those being formed in a calm marine environment with gradually sinking bottom due to epeirogenic movements. Varicoloured laminations indicate slight variations in the feeding material due to the epeirogenic oscillation of the basin bottom level. There is no regularity in clast distribution regarding size, colour or roundedness degree. This, paired with the occurrence of the "in-place brecciation" suggests a sudden fall of brecciated material due to a "catastrophic" event, such as earth-quake, collapse brecciation due to karst dissolution and a large sinkhole formation, or a graben/trench formation as in onset of the extensional processes.

AB - Salt crystallization of lime-based rendering mortars is one of the most common reasons for their deterioration. Still, testing of the resistance to soluble salt action has not yet been standardized for this type of material. Lime-based renders are usually placed in several layers, each of them having a specific role and composition. Nevertheless, tests used in the literature are commonly performed on standardized prismatic or cylindrical mortar specimens. This paper presents a comparison between damage development on the composite samples, prepared on porous stone substrate with two types of rendering mortars, and standardized prismatic mortar specimens. Samples were prepared with pure putty lime mortars and lime-putty based mortars with the addition of natural zeolite. Two types of composite samples and four types of prismatic samples were used during the test. The testing was conducted at the age of 90 days using two types of salt solutions (NaCl and Na2SO4). Damage development was followed visually during five cycles of wetting and drying. Salt distribution using XRF analysis was measured at the end of the test on composite samples. It was shown that damage development greatly depends both on sample and mortar types.

AB - Vast masses of basic rocks are present as tectonic blocks and slices along the Eastern deep fault of the Vardar zone of Serbia. They are predominantly comprised of gabbro, with smaller part made up of diabase, and occurrences of granite, aplite and pegmatite dykes. Basic rock masses are trending along the line Kragujevac (Ždraljica)-Velika Pčelica-Bogalinac ∼8 km west of Rekovac. A significantly smaller diabase massif is present along the same tectonic line, further toward SE, at Prevešt village by Kalenicka River, approximately 13 km south of Rekovac. Drača open pit mine is situated in this diabase massif. Geologic explorative works have confirmed the reserves of 1 846 695 t of stone mass for building purposes. For over a decade, Draca mine has been producing various types of building stone, mainly graded stone aggregate with favourable physico-mechanical properties for road-construction works. Chemical analyses and petrographic study have shown typical composition and fabric for this type of rock. Main constituents are plagioclase and pyroxene, with opaque minerals as accessory and varying secondary minerals - chlorite, calcite, in some places epidote and limonite. Pyrite enrichment is visible in some areas of the massif. Chlorite, calcite, epidote and pyrite are the products of propylitic alteration. Although products of alteration are present throughout the rock mass with variable intensity, as is typical for the basic rocks of the former ocean floor sequences, petrologic properties are favourable for building stone purposes. Physico-mechanical properties of diabase have favourable values and varying scattering degrees. Dry state uniaxial compressive strength average values from seven analyses vary in the range 130-169 MPa. Resistance to abrasion average values vary in the range 9.04-17.07 cm3/50cm2. Apparent density varies within the span 2759-2926 g/cm3 and real density 2804-2951 g/cm3. Water absorption values 0.08-1.04 %. Resistance to weathering through testing of stability using Sodium-sulphate values vary from 0.00 to 0.15 % and through frost resistance from 0.00 to 0.04 %. Porosity values are almost constant at 0.8 %. In more altered parts of the rock mass, porosity reaches 1.6 %. Graded crushed aggregate has favourable values of Los Angeles coefficient 14.2 and 14.3 % for gradation B. Taking into consideration all performed tests and analyses, it is concluded that diabase from Drača mine can be used as a building stone for production of aggregate for use in concrete and for road-construction (asphalt paving mixtures for moderate, light and very light traffic load as a top wearing layer; for lower and upper bearing layers; for classic and modern road foundations); for production of crushed and hewn stone for building; crushed stone for railroad ballast. Also, it can be and is used as a raw material for production of stone wool for thermal insulation purposes.

AB - Thermal properties of the building stone used for cladding and flooring, especially in exteriors, are significant for durability and lifespan of buildings' surfaces covered with it, but also their aesthetic properties in the sense of integrity. Linear thermal expansion of natural stone units is determined in laboratory examinations, aiming to provide the value of yield between the units as free space for their dilatation and contraction upon temperature oscillations. Where this space is not provided, diurnal changes, especially temperature increase, create stone expansion and tension which can lead to deformations of stone units and mar units' and covered surfaces' integrity and aesthetics. Data on linear thermal expansion values of natural stone, especially from Serbia, are very rare in the literature, so our aim is to contribute to this type of knowledge. Examination of thermal dilatation of stone originating from eight plutonic massifs in External Vardar zone of Serbia has shown that the values are very small, parts of millimetres, and lower than those of the similar rock types originating from China, Brazil and Eastern Serbia. A clear grouping of the values of thermal expansion of the stone according to the genetic groups to which the plutons belong to can be observed. Mineral composition, grain size and presence of metallic minerals in samples have shown no clear influence on thermal dilatation values, but fabric inhomogeneity appears to cause the increase of these values.

AB - The City of Belgrade is the largest market for aggregates in Serbia but the production of natural aggregates is rather small, around five percent of total consumption. This reflects the geology of the City of Belgrade territory, dominated by Neogene and Quaternary sedimentary rocks. The production of crushed rock and sand and gravel on the territory of Belgrade was almost equal, while majority of imported aggregates is sand and gravel due to lower price. Consumption of crushed rocks includes around 90 % of limestone and dolomite, the rest being magmatic rocks. The main issue of using crushed rock on the territory of the City of Belgrade is the long transport routes, which are usually near or more than 100 km, creating more logistic problems and increasing cost of aggregates Therefore it is necessary to establish a good supply system with low socio-environmental impact of aggregate production and transport, and the basis for that is the analysis of actual structure of production and supply of natural aggregates and new potential quarries and/or sand and gravel pits.

AB - Volcanic rocks of the Stolovi Mt., located to the south of Kraljevo (central Serbia) are of dacite-andesite composition, intruded as small volcanic bodies into Mesozoic serpentinites. Since the opening of Kamenica quarry on the river Ribnica, these volcanic rocks have been quarried and used for production of cubes, aggregate and small slabs. Technical properties of the stone and petrographic examinations of the rock have been performed in the Materials testing institute in Belgrade for many decades and are here presented. Technical properties of the fresh rock mass zones are satisfying the demands of Serbian standards both for dimensional and technical stone. However, the use as dimensional stone is not possible due to lack of monoliths, intense tectonic fracturing, heterogenic appearance and irregular jointing of the rock, but these characteristics facilitate their quarrying as an aggregate.

AB - The danger from slipping and potential falling of pedestrians while walking on natural stone paved surfaces is a long time known factor to experts and is directly connected with construction works on public surfaces and interiors in the whole world. The slipperiness of pedestrian's footwear against the installed paving stone is a long-term existing problem in construction works on paving interiors and exteriors in Serbia. The slip resistance is defined as the ability of floor surface to maintain the adhesion of pedestrian footwear. At the same time, it is also the resistance to the relative movement of two bodies - in this case the pedestrian footwear and the surface on which the pedestrian traffic is active. This problem is especially pronounced in the city zones with intensive pedestrian traffic after multiannual service life, such as Knez Mihaila street in Belgrade, Serbia.

AB - Recently adopted Serbian standards SRPS EN 1367-5:2007 Determination of resistance to thermal shock and SRPS EN 1367-3:2008 Boiling test for 'Sonnenbrand basalt' present the two completely new methods for stone aggregate testing in our country. The goal of testing is to determine the change of aggregate's physico-mechanical properties when subjected to extremely high temperatures. Aim of this paper is to inform experts in this field about significant new events concerning adoption of European standards for building stone testing.
