AB - Due to its chemical composition based on CaCO3 and low price, eggshells, as waste from one of the most widely consumed foods worldwide, are receiving increased attention in building and construction industry studies. The goal of this study was to see if the chemical composition of eggshells could be utilized to distinguish eggs from different production systems. In Serbia, eggs were taken at random from ten commercial cages and ten commercial free-range flocks. Using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (EDXRF) and a chemometrics approach, twenty eggshell samples from each flock were tested for element composition (Ca, P, Mg, Na, Al, Cu, Mn, Fe, K, S, and Zn). Analysis showed that free-range eggshells had higher levels of macrominerals (P, Mg, and Na) but lower levels of microminerals (Cu, Fe, K, S, and Mn) than caged eggshells (P<0.05). A large degree of variability within and between production systems was observed for all tested elements. The findings suggest that EDXRF and chemometric analysis of eggshell elemental profiles could provide a useful and effective tool for distinguishing between free-range and caged eggs.

AB - The effects of two different mechanically activated kaolins, AKV (61% kaolinite, 14% quartz and 16% mica) and AKG (51.6% kaolinite and 40.6% quartz) on the compressive strength of cement composites and microstructure of pastes were investigated. Composite mixtures, in which 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced by AKV or AKG, were prepared with w/b of 0.5, and exposed to different curing conditions (ordinary curing for 28 days and autoclaving). Factors affecting microstructure were investigated on pastes by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry (DTA/TG) analyses. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and Scanning electron microscopy with Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). AKG composites exhibited higher compressive strengths under both curing conditions. Positive autoclaving effects on strengths were predominantly pronounced at the higher cement replacement levels. Comparison of the autoclaved and ordinary cured paste microstructure, revealed more intensive pozzolanic reaction during autoclaving conditions (CH content near zero) and higher total porosity. The negative effect of hydrogarnet on the strength was compensated by the formation of the crystalline tobermorite. Obtained results revealed that mechanically activated kaolin, with high content of quartz, could be a promising pozzolanic addition, even at high cement replacement levels (30-50%), especially when autoclaving curing conditions were applied.

AB - Kaolin from a Serbian deposit, having a high content of mica and quartz, disordered kaolinite and a high specific surface area, was used to prepare metakaolin (MK). The calcination at temperatures of 700 degrees C or 750 degrees C for 30 to 180 min resulted in MK having high pozzolanic activity, but also significant aglomeration of particles. In order to disperse aglomerates, MK was milled, which resulted in increased pozzolanic activity and reduced particle size. The effects of MK and additionally milled metakaolin (MKmill) on the composite strengths and microstructure of the pastes were compared. We prepared and investigated composites in which ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced with 10% to 50% of MK or MKmill, as well as the representative samples of paste for determination of microstructure. Compressive strengths higher than the control were obtained for composites having up to 30% of MK and up to 40% of MKmill, respectively. Increase of composite strengths with MKmill was more pronounced at lower cement replacement levels (10% and 20%). Compressive strength of composites containing agglomerated MK were satisfactory, which suggests that milling of MK, as well as purification of kaolin, may not be necessary.

AB - Environmental concerns and sustainable development require increased replacement of cement. Most of previous studies have shown that the compressive strength of cement-based composites is maximized with a 20% content of metakaolin. We investigated composites prepared by replacing ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with 30 to 50% of metakaolin (MK) and addition of appropriate amount of hydrated lime, which were ordinary cured for 2, 28 or 90 days. Hydration products and microstructure of the pastes were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry (DTA/TG) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). MK was produced by calcination of kaolin from a Serbian deposit, which contained a high level of impurities. Replacement of OPC with 30% of MK achieved 28 days compressive strength equivalent to that of the control mix. Higher replacement levels, 40% and 50%, combined with the addition of hydrated lime, achieved satisfactory relative strengths of 94% and 87%, respectively. The positive contribution was particularly pronounced after 90 days for a composite containing 50% of MK. The results clearly showed a possibility of obtaining composites having acceptable compressive strength with reduced cement content in accordance with environmental and sustained development requirements.

AB - The effects of thermally (MK) or mechanically activated kaolin (AK) on the compressive strength of mortars and microstructure of pastes were investigated. Mortar mixtures, in which 10%, 20% and 30% of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced by either MK or AK, were prepared (w/b of 0.5) and ordinary (age 2, 28 or 90 days) and autoclave cured. Hydration products were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry (DTA/TG) analysis, while microstructure was investigated by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). MK substitution increases the compressive strength of ordinary-cured mortars, as a result of the higher content of reactive silica that caused more pronounced pozzolanic reaction, as well as by effective refinement of their pore structure. Positive effects on the compressive strength could be achieved up to 30% substitution of OPC by MK The OPC substitution by AK resulted in lower strengths of ordinary-cured mortars, compared to both MK mortars and reference. Higher specific surface area and finer particles of AK were insufficient to compensate, through filler effect, lower pozzolanic reaction and additional negative influence of the kaolinite presence. The highest compressive strength was obtained for mortar with 10% of AK (relative strength of 94%). In comparison to the reference, autoclaved MK and AK mortars, exhibited lower compressive strength, as a consequence of increasing the hydrogarnet formation, instead of tobermorite. The highest strength was achieved for mortar with 10% of AK.

AB - The subject of this research is development of a new generation of mineral admixtures, obtained by thermal and mechanochemical activation of kaolin clay, and testing of the properties of the cement based composites, where a part of the portland cement is replaced by pozzolanic materials, metakaolin and amorphous kaolin, for different curing conditions. The results showed that thermal and mechanochemical activation of kaolin clay were equally suitable for obtaining pozzolanic materials. Positive effects on the compressive strength could be achieved by using up to 30 % of MK, and with additional grinding after thermal activation, content of MK could be increased up to 40 %, with the addition of CH, under the normal curing conditions. Amorphous kaolin could be used in composites with a cement replacement level of 10 %, under the normal and autoclave curing conditions.

AB - Kaolin from a Serbian deposit, characterized by high content of impurities, such as mica and quartz, disordered kaolinite and high specific surface area, was subjected to thermal and mechanical activation on a large scale. Activations were carried out with a goal to investigate the effects of applied methods on the chemical, structural and morphological changes that occurred in the kaolin, and their influence on the pozzolanic activity. The changes were monitored using XRD, FTIR, TG/DTA, PSD, BET and SEM analyses. Pozzolanic activity was evaluated by determination of the 7-day compressive strength conducted on the lime mortars. The results showed that mechanical activation by milling the kaolin for 20 h in the conventional horizontal ball mill was competitive for obtaining pozzolana as thermal activation. Pozzolanic activity of thermally activated kaolin was mainly influenced by formation of metakaolin. Combined effects (such as significant specific surface area increase, as well as partial kaolinite and complete mica phase amorphization) were dominant in pozzolanic activity of mechanically activated kaolin.

AB - The metakaolin was produced by thermal treatment (calcination) of the starting high-quality kaolin clay from Serbia. The optimal calcination parameters, for which nearly complete dehydroxylation of the material was achieved, are: temperature 650°C and heating time of 90 min. The conversion of the kaolinite to metakaolinite was confirmed by XRD and IR analyses of the starting and thermally treated kaolin samples. The pozzolanic activity was determined by Chapelle test. The obtained value 0.65 g Ca(OH)2/g of metakaolin indicates that produced metakaolin may be used as supplementary cementitious material.

The obtained value 0.65 g Ca(OH)2/g of metakaolin indicates that produced metakaolin may be used as supplementary cementitious material.",

AB - The technology for obtaining pozzolanic additive - metakaolin, from domestic kaolin clay Vrbica, is developed in the Institute for testing of materials IMS-Belgrade. Pozzolanic behavior of the produced metakaolin is verified by determining the characteristics of Portland cement made with addition of 5 to 20 % by mass metakaolin. The characteristics of Portland cement made with addition of metakaolin (CEM II) were compared with Portland cement (CEM I), which was used as a control sample. The composite cements have lower setting time (initial and final) as well as compressive strengths after 2 days. Compressive strengths after 7 and 28 days are greater than compressive strengths obtained for the control cement, independently on the metakaolin content. The addition of 10 and 15 % by mass metakaolin increases compressive strengths for approximately 15 %.

AB - One of the globally accepted principles in the Sustainable Development Strategy is sustainable production and consumption which are including environmental, material and energy efficiency in each stage of production of goods and services, starting from design, production, to primary and secondary use and recycling and disposal. Portland cement is a pre-eminent construction material which world production exceeds 2 billion t per year. Despite this success, the industry faces challenges related to improved durability and enhanced performance while at the same time improving the sustainability of production. Portland cement is not environmentally very friendly material. The production of 1t of portland cement requires 1.6 t of raw materials, primarily good quality limestone and clay. Also, production of 1t of portland cement clinker is said to create approximately 1t of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHG) and requires lots of fuels and energy. The cement industry is fully aware of their part of the responsibility in implementing all the necessary measures and over the past decades, has been actively involved in seeking ways to consume less energy and natural resources, and emit less CO2 per unit of cement produced. Cement industry can significantly contributes to the sustainable development by continuously reducing the CO2 emission from cement production by increased use of biofuels and alternative raw materials as introducing modified low-energy clinker types and cements with reduced clinker content. .

AB - Environmental concerns coming from the high energy consumption and CO2 emission associated with cement production have brought about pressures to reduce cement consumption through the use of new materials which can be applied for substitution of a part of clinker in Portland cement or a part of cement in concrete. One of the materials that satisfy requirements of sustainable development and, when added in appropriate shares, improves the properties of cement, mortars and concrete, is metakaolin (MK), a processed pozzolana. The main and widely used raw material for production of metakaolin is kaolin clay. MK is produced by calcination or "thermal activation" of kaolin clay. The possibilities for metakaolin production are strongly related to the characteristics of the used kaolin clay. The samples of domestic kaolin clay used in this study were provided by factories Kaolin, Valjevo, and Keramika, Mladenovac. Chemical composition, mineralogical composition and thermal properties of these samples were determined. Thermal analysis (simultaneous recording of TG, DTG and DTA signals) was carried out at the temperature range from 20 to 1200 degrees C. For both clays the results show that the loss of mass occurred in two stages. The dehydroxillation of kaolinite and formation of metakaolin occurred in the second stage. Minerals quartz and kaolinite are dominant in the clay Kaolin, Valjevo. Dehydroxillation of kaolinite and formation of metakaolin took place in the temperature range 350-800 degrees C. This clay does not have clearly distinct exothermic and endothermic peaks. Clay from Keramika, Mladenovac, has a higher content of the kaolinite mineral, i.e. 81.51%. The dehydroxillation of kaolinite and fori-nation of metakaolin occured in the temperature range 400-700 degrees C. This clay has two distinct endothermic peaks at 60 and 490 degrees C. All these results show that both clays can be used for production of metakaolin.

AB - Metakaolin (MK) is thermally activated alumino-silicate material with high pozzolanic activity. MK is quite useful in improving concrete quality, such as enhancing strength, shortening setting time (whether this characteristic is advantageous depends on the application of cements), decreasing autogenous shrinkage, controlling alkali aggregate reaction, reducing risk of chloride-induced corrosion of embedded steel and improving the durability of concrete. Therefore, MK is a promising supplementary material for manufacturing high-performance concrete.
