AB - Topic of this work is the integrity assessment of the pipeline section from hydropower plant Pirot. Crack-like defect size, maximum depth, is determined based on non-destructive evaluation - the largest crack depth is taken as the initial value for load carrying capacity estimation. Also, the crack dimensions (both length and depth) are varied. Limit pressure values are determined from 3D and 2D models of pipes with axial cracks on external surface. The influence of tensile loading on the load carrying capacity of the pipes with circumferential cracks is also examined. Integrity of pipes with both types of defects (axial and circumferential) is assessed through application of FAD diagrams.

AB - In this work, the presence of TiO2 nanoparticle-based activated flux combined with orbital welding of seamless thick-walled pipes of stainless steel and low-cycle pulse current was done, representing a novel combination of welding processes parameters. Control specimens were welded without flux and consumable material, and without flux with the consumable material. Experimental welding with different welding parameters was done. Special attention was given to characterize the flux by zetasizer method, representing a new approach, versus the conventional approach where the nominal oxide particle size is reported. The obtained welds were visually tested, macroanalyzed, their microstructures examined, and their tensile and bending properties determined. The results show that the flux influences a significant increase in penetration depth, up to full penetration, which has a positive effect on the increase in the tensile and bending properties of the weld metal. Material beahvior model was developed, based on microstructural features of the near weld-line. Without the flux, grain enlargement occurred near the surface, while with flux, it occurred under the weld, which can be attributed to recrystallization and a reversed Marangoni convection.

AB - Hydro power plant Pirot, which was built in 1990, is an accumulation-derivative power plant, which consists of 2 above-ground vertical hydroelectric generating sets that contain Francis turbines with nominal power of 41,5 MW, manufactured in Czech Republic, a tunnel and a sunken pipeline with overall length of 2.030 m and diameter that ranges from 3.000 to 3.500 m. Pipes have been made of S275J2G3 steel. Pipe wall is 22 mm thick. Maximum pressure of 2.5 MPa occurs in front of the turbine cover. Geodetic measurements have been conducted permanently from the day the assembly was finished and pipeline was put into service, both when pipeline is empty and unloaded by hydrostatic pressure and when it is full. Analysis of obtained data regarding the movements along the pipeline route showed that from year 2003 there are significantly higher differences in movements comparing the situations when the pipeline is full and when it is empty in comparison with the previous period. This paper contains the analysis of current state and strength evaluation of the pipeline as a whole on the basis of results of non-destructive tests performed on the vital butt - welded joint in the curvature area at chainage 1+263 m (visual testing, magnetic particle testing, penetrant testing, ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, metallographic replication testing).

AB - The application of high strength steels in design of heavy duty welded structures requires data about properties in different loading conditions. Thanks to high yield stress the wall thickness can be reduced compared to mild structural steels, and accordingly welded joint cross-sections, welding consumables consumption and time for welded joints manufacturing will be minimized. This is of importance for pressurized equipment, but also for other industrial branches (cranes, excavator). Complete characterization of welded joint has to include data for parent metal, but also the properties for weld metal and the heat-affected-zone (HAZ) are necessary, at least in order to compare them with parent metal properties. This is of special importance because of heterogeneity structure in HAZ.

AB - In this work, the structural and mechanical properties of friction stir welded dissimilar butt joints of AA2024-T351 to AA5083-H112 aluminum alloys were evaluated. Plates of 6 mm thick were friction stir welded with optimized tool. In the first case, plate of AA2024 was positioned on the advancing and plate of AA5083 was on the retreating side of the weld. In second case, position of the plate was opposite. Specimens were welded using rotation rate of 750 rpm and welding speed of 73 and 93 mm/min. Specimens were defect free, with good or acceptable weld surface. The effects of rotation and lateral speed of the welding tool were related to structural features and mechanical properties. The structural appearances of concentric rings in the nugget zone were controlled by tool speed and plate position. Structural analysis of the joint cross-section, revealed the distinct lamellar bands. The joints consistently failed on the AA5083 aluminum alloy plate. Failures were observed through the heat-affected zone at distance of approximately 21 mm from weld center.

Structural analysis of the joint cross-section, revealed the distinct lamellar bands. The joints consistently failed on the AA5083 aluminum alloy plate. Failures were observed through the heat-affected zone at distance of approximately 21 mm from weld center.",

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the combined effect of small difference in pin geometry, together with rotation and welding speed on the weldability, mechanical and structural properties of FSW 2024-T351 Al plates. The only difference in tool pin design was the shape of thread: regular and rounded. Specimens were welded using rotation rate of 750 rev/min and welding speeds of 73 and 93 mm/min. Specimens were defect free, with good or acceptable weld surface, in all four cases. Modification in pin design showed strong influence on macro structure and hardness distribution. Weak places are identified as low hardness zone, close to the nugget zone and are in good agreement with fracture location in tensile testing. Weld efficiency, as a measure of weld quality, is better in case of 310 tool, while UTS values can differ up to 13% for the equal welding parameters. Therefore, it can be assumed that small modification in tool design, particularly in pin geometry, can have great influence on weld formation and mechanical properties.

AB - Vertical Kaplan turbines, manufactured in Russia and with nominal power of 200 MW, have been installed in 6 hydroelectric generating units at ’Djerdap 1’. During the refurbishment of hydropower plant experimental non-destructive tests were performed in order to determine the state of turbine components. During the course of testing damage was detected at sleeves and welded shields of guide vanes, which occurred as a consequence of turbine shaft vibrations. 1782 mm long guide vane sleeves were made of cast steel 25L (GOST standard), 260 mm long sleeve was made of forged steel St 25 (GOST standard), while welded shields of guide vanes were made of austenitic steel 08X18H10T (GOST standard). Results of experimental tests and methodology for reparation of damaged surfaces of sleeves and welded shields of guide vanes are presented in this paper. It was necessary, due to the structural solution used for the design of guide vanes and their function during service, to define a large number of details, carefully reconsider them and carry out all activities with extreme care in order to enable the safe operation and continuous use of vanes through the use of reparation methodology for welding/surface welding of sleeves and welded shields. Overlooking, underestimation or incorrect perception of important details could cause significant problems during turbine operation.

AB - Stable supply tank, with volume V = 250 m3 and operating pressure p = 1,5 MPa, of generation unit 6 at thermal power plant 'Nikola Tesla A' in Obrenovac, is designed for water-steam working fluid. It was made of steel Č 1204 as a single-part welded structure with a single wall. Cylindrical tank shell consists of 8 segments, while torispherical deep bottoms consist of 3 segments. The tank is in the horizontal position and it lays on 4 supports. There are five manometers installed at the tank for pressure control, as well as 5 spring-loaded safety valves. In this paper results of non-destructive tests performed on the tank are presented. Mechanical damages on parent material, up to 1.5 mm deep, were detected at the outer surface of the cylindrical section of the right bottom (as seen from the boiler) and on the inner surface of the shell, as well as sporadic pitting corrosion, up to 0.5 mm deep, and 2 mm misalignment of sheet metals in areas where shell segments are joined. Crack type linear indications were detected on the surface of welded joints through the use of magnetic particle testing. Through ultrasonic and radiographic testing it was determined that the homogeneity of welded joints is satisfactory. Hardness testing was performed on all segments of the tank, and obtained values were in the range between 118 and 130 HB. Metallographic examination, performed on specimens of all segments of the tank, showed that microstructure of material is either fine-grained or striped ferrite-pearlite. On the basis of test results the repair technology for shell and bottom segments was made, while on the basis of the analytical calculation of tank strength the integrity evaluation was carried out for the upcoming period of service, depending on the category of the vessel.

AB - This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis of the change of temperature and force in the vertical direction during the friction stir welding of high-strength aluminium alloy 2024 T3. This procedure confirmed the correctness of the numerical model, which is subsequently used for analysis of the temperature field in the welding zone, where it is different to determine the temperature experimentally. 3D finite element model is developed using the software package Abaqus; arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation is applied. Johnson-Cook material law and Coulomb's Law of friction are used for modelling the material behaviour. Temperature fields are symmetrical with respect to the welding line. The temperature values below the tool shoulder, i.e. in the welding zone, which are reached during the plunge stage, are approximately constant during the entire welding process and lie within the interval 430-502 degrees C. The temperature of the material in the vicinity of the tool is about 500 degrees C, while the values on the top surface of the welding plates (outside the welding zone, but close to the tool shoulder) are about 400 degrees C. The temperature difference between the top and bottom surface of the plates is small, 10-15 degrees C.

AB - Metal materials are subjected to innumerable time-dependent degradation mechanisms when operate in power, petrochemical and refinery plant. These materials are subjected to multiaxial stresses, creep, fatigue, corrosion and abrasion. As a result of service especially at high temperatures and high pressures, can lead to forming cracks, damages or failures. In situation of breakdown in such systems there is a need for weld repair on plant components and repair work can be expensive and time-consuming. Most weld repairs of low alloy steels require high-temperature post weld heat treatment (PWHT); but in certain repairs, however, this is not always possible. Expenses of the repair work could be reduced if the weld repairing is performed on site. Also, application of the nickel based filler metal can be alternative to performing PWHT. These repair welding procedures with Ni based filler metal could be categorized as cold repair welding. Purpose of presented investigation was to compare a repair welding technology with filler austenite material based on Ni and without application of the PWHT, with a classical repair welding procedure with preheating and PWHT and using a filler metal with chemical composition similar to parent metal. Properties comparison of the welded joints obtained by these two repair welding technologies was performed for the Cr-Mo steel (13CrMo4-5) by the metal arc welding procedure with covered electrode (MMA - 111). Weldability analysis by the analytical equations and technological tests for determination of the sensitivity to crack forming for cold and hot cracks by the CTS and Y tests, were performed for both repair welding technologies. Tensile tests, absorbed energies tests, banding tests and hardness measurements were performed on trial joins. Light optical microscopy (LOM) was applied for microstructure analysis. The fracture toughness of welded joints obtained by both investigated technologies, were estimated by the calculated stress intensity factor KIc and dynamic stress intensity factor KId for weld metal and heat affected zone. All of the obtained results were analyzed and discussed. It was concluded that repair welding technology with Ni base filler material without PWHT, enables welded joints without the appearance of cracks, with a good mechanical properties, slightly higher hardness in the HAZ, but with lower expenses compared to standard repair welding technology. In applying this technology in emergency welding repairing on-site, on the equipment and industrial facilities with high security requirements, inspection using non destructive technique has to be frequently applied compared to standard procedures.

AB - The influence of R/v ratio on joint quality in 2024-T351 aluminum alloy was studied. Specimens were subjected to friction stir welding with the rotation rates of 750, 950 and 1180 r/min and welding speed between 73 and 190 mm/min, providing R/v ratio between 5.00 and 10.27. The welded joints were tested by means of both non-destructive (visual, penetrant and X-ray inspection) and destructive (metallographic, tension and hardness) testing. In all specimens typical zones are revealed, with corresponding differences in grain size. Tensile efficiency of the joints obtained is in the range of 52.2% to 82.3%. The results show that the best quality is obtained at R/v ratio of 8.06, 10.17 and 10.27. This behavior is attributed to the assumption that the material flows around the pin with an optimal speed, i.e. sufficient amount of material is available to fill the gap and prevent tunnel formation. R/v ratio also showed influence on hardness distribution, onion features and crack initiation/propagation zones.

AB - Since local defects reduce the load-carrying capacity and deformation ability of a piping system, an analysis is undertaken to quantify the influence of weld defects on integrity of the pipe elbows subjected to internal pressure. Incompletely filled groove is examined, because this type of defect was previously detected by ultrasonic measurement on the inner surface of the pipeline from a hydro-power plant. Three-dimensional finite element analysis is conducted using Abaqus software package. The influence of weld defect geometry (its depth, length and location) on the elbow integrity is determined. Additionally, decrease of load carrying capacity is determined for the case when a crack has initiated at the bottom of the defect. The influence of finite element type (hexahedral or tetrahedral) is examined.

AB - The aim of this work was to establish the influence of initial state of base metal on properties of mma welded 14MoV 6 3 steel. Three combinations of specimens were welded: (i) virgin-virgin (N-N); (ii) used-used (S-S); (iii) virgin-used (N-S). Used specimens were 52000 hours in exploitation. It has been established that the fracture is initiated in the zone of used part. It is assumed that the critical conditions were achieved as the consequence of creep induced grain growth and particle coarsening. On the other hand, testing of unused specimens revealed the highest level of strength.

AB - Friction Stir Welding is relatively young welding process in solid state which is created in The Welding Institute - London, during 1991 year. The first application is connected with railway and aluminum and aluminum alloys welding but later the application range is extended, so today this process successfully welded many pure metals, alloys also, non-metals in all industrial branches (railway, aircraft, automotive, shipyard etc). Two decades after formation, FSW process is the mostly used for aluminum and aluminum alloys welding, so it is not surprise that the first step in FSW standardization is connected to aluminum welding. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to basic terms for FSW which are presented in actual standards and suggested appropriated terms on Serbian language.

AB - The most significant components of hydropower plants are turbine shafts and generator rotors which undergo time-dependent processes such as high stresses, creep, fatigue and corrosion. It is therefore desirable to prevent in-service damages, improve reliability and extend the operational life of the plant. Plant operation can lead to cracking and failures in homogeneous materials, therefore a need for repair welding on plant components, which can be expensive and time-consuming, exists. In the circumstances when repair welding has to be carried out on site, special care has to be taken in defining repair welding technology, process parameters and selection of filler materials. In this research a selection of filler materials for repair welding on site of hydropower turbine shaft was performed and results were presented. The shaft was made of the cast steel 20Mn5 and presence of damages in the form of cracks which were up to 400 mm long and up to 20 mm deep was detected through the use of NDT methods. As the repairing was planned to be carried out without disassembling of the shaft, application of heat treatment procedures was not feasible. Weldability analysis of the base material was performed through the use of analytical equations. Results have shown that weldability of this steel is limited. For the repair welding a MMA (111) welding process was selected and two covered austenitic electrodes were analyzed in order to establish the feasibility of their use as potential filler material for repairing. In this research a Fe-Ni-Cr-Mo electrode and Ni based electrode were tested and their properties were compared. Tensile testing, absorbed energies tests, bending tests, hardness measurements and sensitivity tests such as 'CTS' and 'Y' were performed on test joints obtained by welding of base material, 20Mn5 steel, with investigated filler materials. Obtained results were analyzed and a Ni based electrode was selected as most suitable for repair welding.

AB - Present-day reliance on wheeled and tracked armour personnel carriers (APCs) and infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), may be changed in the future. Shaped charge grenades and impovised explosive devices (IEDs) represent a considerable threat, even to well protected main battle tanks (MBTs). Paradoxically, the crew of wheeled and tracked troop-carrying vehicles is numerically three to four times larger than that of MBTs, however, their protection in all aspects is significantly lower. Therefore, heavier vehicles may get more attention in the future, where sharing the chassis and a number of components with MBTs could provide significant reductions in procurement costs and maintenance, as well as a simplified logistics in relation to the latest tracked. Obviously, the IFVs mobility of heavy vehicles would be lower than that of lighter vehicles. However, by applying various degrees of modular armour protection, a significant rise in strategic, operational, and tactical mobility could be achieved. Such heavy tracked vehicles, built on a common chassis as MBTs, may equip the future heavy brigades, which will be in contrast to the lighter wheeled vehicles included in rapid deployment brigades. As a result, tracked personnel carrying vehicles may extinct in the future.

AB - In this paper microstructural and mechanical properties of high-carbon steel surface welded layer, obtained with self-shielded flux cored wire, are presented in the case of a standard rails and crossings. The testing results of tensile characteristics, hardness, toughness via instrumented Charpy pendulum, microstructural analysis and fatigue crack growth resistance of all characteristical zones are analysed in details, especially from the point of view of interaction between microstructure and properties. Obtained results indicate superior properties of repaired welded layers, due to their similarity to the new generation of bainitic steel, i.e., due to change of microstructure from original pearlitic structure to final bainitic structure. Finally, fatigue crack growth parameters have shown that deposite layer has higher resistance to the crack growth, improving overall reliability of rails and crossings.

AB - Polimetilmetakrilat (PMMA), zbog svojih karakteristika, pre svega transparentnosti i relativno male gustine, predstavlja danas vrlo atraktivan materijal u inženjerstvu.
AB - Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has attractive features, primarily its transparency and low density, which make it a very promising engineering material. Therefore, a novel bonding and welding techniques are being developed, to enable obtaining more complex and larger products. In this paper, perspective bonding and welding processes are presented: ultrasound welding, thermal bonding, microwave welding and friction spot welding. Furthermore, shear strengths of joints obtained by different techniques are shown. Shear strength of joints is commonly used to evaluate the quality of joints. The highest shear strength has friction spot welding, followed by microwave welding. The lowest shear strengths were obtained with thermal bonding and ultrasound welding. Specific characteristics of each joining technique determine their usefulness: friction spot welding is more suited to welding large pieces, while the work piece dimensions weldable by microwave welding is limited by microwave chamber size.

AB - Metallurgical evaluation was performed on a fractured column tube of the reformer furnace in an ammonia plant. The tubes were manufactured from centrifugally cast heat resistant steel HK 40. Optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used for microstructural and fracture analysis. For composition determination of the microconstituents energy dispersive X ray spectroscopy (EDS) was used. To evaluate mechanical properties, hardness and microhardness measurements were performed. Investigations based on the microstructural features with the idea to indicate suitability of weld repair of the column were performed in this study. It was observed that the crack initiation, caused by oxidation/corrosion and thermal stresses induced by temperature gradient, appeared in the inner side of the tube wall and propagation occurred along grain boundaries. The results clearly showed the presence of an irregular microstructure which contributed to crack propagation through the tube wall. An occurrence of precipitated needle-shaped carbides/carbonitrides and brittle a phase was also identified in the microstructure. Results of the microstructural and fracture analysis clearly indicate that reformer furnace columns made of heat resistant steel HK 40 were unsuitable for weld repair.

AB - In this paper, the ballistic resistance of perforated plates made of different types of steel, mounting and geometry was investigated. Different types of steel in various heat treatment conditions were tested. Target mounting was also varied: rigid, oblique and hanging. Furthermore, four different perforated plate geometries were tested: two plate thicknesses and two hole diameters. Their behaviour was tested using impact from firing 12.7 mm M-8 API ammunition at eleven perforated plate samples. These samples were placed by means of a steel frame over a 13 mm RHA plate, at two distances. Damaged area on targets was correlated to ballistic resistance of the whole armour to find the optimal perforated plate. It was found that perforated plates, in optimized case offer a frequent fracture of the penetrating core in up to five parts. This debris is unable to penetrate the basic plate, offering mass effectiveness of the whole armour model of 1.76 and the mass effectiveness of the perforated plate of 5.91.

AB - In this paper, the behaviour of wire fence was investigated for potential as applique armour. The wire fence used was made from commercial high-strength patented wire and the supporting frames were made of mild steel L-profiles. Both patented wire and L-profiles are of-the-shelf materials. The fence was tested by firing 12.7 min M8 API ammunition at four applique armour models: two of these models use a parallel wire arrangement, with one mounted at a 90 degrees angle from the incoming projectile and the other at 70 degrees; and two of these models use a zig-zag wire arrangement, one mounted at a firm 90 degrees, angle and the other is left in a hanging arrangement. Fence damage was correlated with RHA basic plate damage, on both the face and back. Wire fence has considerable potential as an improvised applique armour, except if the projectile impacts near the center of the wire or near the center between two wires. The latter case was successfully overcome by placing the armour model at an angle and by using a zig-zag wire arrangement. The lowest basic RHA plate damage level was found using the hanging armour model. However, from the point of view of ease of attachment, the most convenient was found to be the armour model with the zig-zag wire arrangement fixed at 90 degrees angle from the incoming projectile. SEM fracto graphy revealed that the fracture surface was predominantly ductile, with dimples filled with debris from the incendiary effect of the projectile.

AB - At different time periods, loss in structural integrity occurs from initiation of manufacture defects in the welded joint. Failure mechanisms are different and present a new experience always requiring new knowledge and approach in solving the problem. Extended analyses of all failures considered here and derived conclusions are yet not sufficient in completely avoiding manufacture imperfections and assuring in-service integrity of welded structures. Directives, standards and recommendations for manufacturing welded structures significantly contribute in problem solving which they cannot completely eliminate due to the complexity and numerous influencing factors.

AB - An analysis of the influence of heterogeneity of the ferriteaustenite welded joint on its integrity has been performed. The Charpy specimens, with notch positioned in different regions of welded joint, have been tested using the instrumented pendulum to separate crack initiation and growth energy. In all cases tested (different heat input, room and low temperature, down to -60°C), weld metal had the lowest toughness, due to the presence of S ferrite, which was not the case in the heat affected zones, having surprisingly high toughness, including both crack initiation and growth energies. Finally, J-R curves have been obtained by using standard fracture mechanics testing procedure and compared with crack driving forces, obtained numerically using King's method, enabling estimation of influence of cracks on integrity of ferriteaustenite welded joints in cylindrical pressure vessel.
