AB - The main objective of the research was to estimate the feasibility of construction and demolition waste (CDW) application in the production of frost-resistant masonry clay elements. After being formed into hollow masonry blocks and bricks, the experimental samples were dried and fired. Chemical, granulometric, mineralogical, differential-thermal, and thermogravimetric analyses were used for characterizing the materials. Drying sensitivity and plasticity were assessed using the Bigot and Pfefferkorn tests. Linear shrinkage and compressive strength were determined on green and fired ceramic samples. Frost resistance was tested in accordance with EN 772-22 and ASTM C1167-22. The mercury intrusion porosimeter and RapidAir 457 were used in the evaluation of the pore size distribution. Clay elements fired at lower temperatures proved more frost-resistant. Waste-based elements exhibited improved frost resistance compared to standard bricks and hollow blocks. The compressive strength of the waste-added building products was reduced, but it still exceeded the standard strength values for their application in load-bearing walls.

AB - Sustainable preservation of historic buildings is a long-term process that begins with the analysis of all data related to their creation and further duration and ends with the proposal of measures to preserve their current condition and prevent future damage. In accordance with this, the most important goal of the project Mortar Design for Conservation - Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after - MoDeCo2000, was set. Data obtained from the archaeological, architectural, and geological context research with the thorough laboratory testing of sampled Roman mortars along the river Danube in Serbia was used to create valuable proposals for the design of compatible mortar mixtures that could be used for the conservation of the structures in the investigated area.

AB - Dolomite is a valuable mineral commodity with numerous industrial applications. Dolostones are mineral resources with significant growth potential. The study area encompasses south and central Montenegro. Mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical, and technological properties were investigated. Upper Cretaceous dolostones are compact and contain organic matter, whereas Triassic dolostones are weathered dolomites without organic matter. Both of formations displayed varying dolostone quality, prompting the geological and technological classification of Montenegrin dolostones. Upper Cretaceous dolostones are utilized in the building industry as aggregate, dimension stone, and filler, whereas Triassic dolomites are not suitable as dimension stone and have limited potential as aggregate. Both dolostones can be utilized in the steel industry and agriculture, but not as high-quality fillers when whiteness is a limitation, or for lime production where chemical composition and grain size are regulated. This is the first comprehensive study of geochemical evaluations of dolostone deposits in the Balkans and their potential industrial use.

AB - In this study, pyrophyllite was used for the first time in the composition of protective refractory coatings together with supplementary waste resources. The proposed refractory coatings are applicable for metallic and non-metallic structures, with the option of using them to protect machinery components in the chemical industry, metallurgy, and mining. Given that pyrophyllite has a low hardness, the goal was to improve the coating's resistance to cavitation erosion by adding 20 wt.% of hard refractory materials, i.e., crushed and micronized waste bricks based on mullite and corundum, respectively. Previous studies have demonstrated that protective coatings using a pyrophyllite filler have refractory qualities but insufficient resistance to cavitation erosion. As a result, the composition of refractory coatings, the preparation techniques, and the coating manufacturing process were altered. This study presents a simple method for combining conventional coatings made of refractory fillers (primary resource: pyrophyllite) with waste materials (mullite brick and corundum brick) used as reinforcement in protective refractory coatings for metal and non-metal structural elements that are highly resistant to cavitation erosion.

AB - Following the emergence and establishment of performance-based design as a widely recognized
and applied practice, numerous significant advances in computational techniques have been
made. Arguably, nonlinear methods of analysis – static or dynamic – provide the most detailed
and accurate insight into behavior of the structure which is designed or assessed. While the
current codes of practice permit their use, provisions are vague in some aspects, leaving many
decisions and assumptions up to the engineer. This paper aims to expand the relatively limited
experience with implementation of different distributed plasticity modeling approaches through
a case study based on experimental data. Some particulars of the behavior of structural elements
made of strain-softening materials, and of their corresponding numerical models, are briefly
introduced. Case study is conducted to provide an overview on the procedures for inelastic
analysis of reinforced concrete frames through a side-by-side comparison of four alternative
approaches for modeling of RC beams and columns with one-dimensional distributed plasticity
finite elements with fiber-discretized cross sections. The analyzed structure consists of a
reinforced concrete column with a fixed base, which is, under varying axial loads, subjected to
monotonic and cyclic lateral displacements applied at its top. Models comprised of force-based
elements with different arrangements of integration points, as well as of displacement-based
elements, are compared. Advantages, limitations and special considerations which need to be
taken into account for each of the approaches are demonstrated through the example. Influence
of concrete confinement is studied by analyzing another column with a different arrangement of
transverse reinforcement. Global structural response is evaluated by comparison of pushover and
cyclic curves for different models. Influence of modeling approach on objectivity of the local
response and the corrections which need to be made for certain approaches are showcased by
moment-rotation curves of the yielded section at the column base. Considerations and findings
presented in the paper, along with other published case studies, can be used for reference when
preparing a computational model for inelastic analysis of a reinforced concrete structure.

AB - For the purposes of researching the influence of rainfall factors on soil shear strength, i.e. soil erosion resistance, research was conducted on plots measuring 1.0x0.3 m at a slope of 15°, with equally prepared soil. It’s been carried out 12 rainfall simulations with different values of rainfall factors (rainfall intensity and drops diameter). These simulations were carried out with a modified rain simulator with sprayers by Živanović et. al (2021). The analysis of the uniformity of the prepared soil, as well as the examination of the influence of simulated rainfall factors on soil erosion, was carried out by measuring with a pocket vane tester (Eijkelkamp M1.14.10.E). The measurement was carried out at 30 regularly spaced locations on every plot, immediately after the simulation was completed. Also, the measurement was carried out after 24 hours in three places (upper, middle and lower third of the plot). Spatial distribution of measured values was assessed by Christians' coefficient of uniformity CU. The measured shear strength values of the prepared soil range from 2.1 to 6.9 kN/m2. The shear strength values immediately after the simulation range from 0.4 to 5.4 kN/m2, while after 24 hours they range from 2.4 to 8.1 kN/m2. The CU values of the prepared soil range from 68% to 81% (average 75%). Immediately after the simulation, Cu values range from 73% to 83%, while after 24 hours, from 69% to 91%. In general, there is a clear trend of decreasing values measured with the pocket vane tester from the top to the bottom of the plots. Also, the influence of the change in soil moisture on the values of soil shear strength was observed. The change in rainfall factors affects the change in soil resistance to erosion.

AB - Quantity of waste rubber generated by automobile tires is growing, posing an environmental threat. Rubber tire recycling was studied for usage in asphalt and waterproofing systems during past few decades. Globally, concrete is the most widely used building material. About 7% of CO2 emissions come from the cement production. The purpose of this research is to assess if using waste rubber and Portland cement together in composite material for structural applications is feasible. Waste tires (shredded to 0/1 mm) were used as fine aggregate replacement (in 2.5 and 7.5 %), together with PC and natural stone. An investigation of properties in fresh (slump test, bulk density, air content) and hardened state (bulk density, compressive strength) was performed on the rubberized concrete. The compressive strength decreased by increasing the rubber content for all w/c ratios (0.55-0.4). The addition of fine-sized rubber did not cause a retardation in cement hydration mechanism. According to the obtained compressive strengths, all designed rubberized concretes belong to a group of structural concretes.

AB - Waste tires have long been a challenge for waste disposal. In an effort to mitigate the impact of solid waste on the environment and recycle it as much as possible, research has been conducted into the possibility of using this waste in concrete mixes. However, the use of these waste materials in concrete is still not popular due to the lack of knowledge of the properties that can be obtained with this material. Hence, the aim is to use waste material in the production of concrete, and that concrete mixes with this material have satisfactory performance. The paper presents the results of research on concrete in which volume replacement of fine aggregate with crumb rubber was performed in the amount of 5%, and this concrete was compared with the control concrete mix and aerated concrete. All concrete are made with a water-cement factor of 0.45. The performance of fresh concrete was monitored for 10, 30 and 60 min. In the case of concrete with the addition of crumb rubber, after 60 min, higher values of air content were obtained, and lower values of volume mass of fresh concrete compared to the initial measurements. The obtained test results of hardened concrete indicate that concrete with crumb rubber has a lower compressive strength compared to the control concrete mix, while compared to aerated concrete, they obtain approximate compressive strength values.

AB - The paper presents the 7R algorithm of the circular economy principle in realizing wearable sensors. The application of additive manufacturing in the realization of sensors is essential from the point of view of sustainable production, which starts from the material and ends with its recycling process. All seven principles and their connection with additive manufacturing as a critical element in the circular economy are presented. The paper defines the theoretical framework for realizing a sustainable wearable sensor. The production of such sensors primarily refers to the application of flexible 3D printing and electronic components that can be quickly replaced, modified, disassembled, and recycled.

AB - Welded structures are exposed to constant variable loads during their exploitation in real conditions. A variable load affects the
integrity and life of a welded structure; therefore, it is of practical importance to understand fatigue behavior, especially the behavior
of welded structures under the impact of low-cycle fatigue. The effect of low-cycle fatigue is very prevalent in structures
and an assessment of cyclic loading of a material entails modifications of its properties and characteristics related to the dependence
of stress and strain. Since the stress-strain response during low-cycle fatigue is in the form of a hysteresis loop, this paper
presents the application of one of the two most common relations for testing resistance to low-cycle fatigue, the
Ramberg-Osgood relation, which is used to evaluate the behavior of a material, in this case a high-strength low-alloy steel
welded joint.

AB - In order to ensure pipeline safety during their service life, all relevant construction, testing and safety requirements must be met. Corrosion damage is a major hazard to the steel pipeline as a whole, and it is necessary to comply with inspections and adequate maintenance so that destruction with catastrophic consequences would be avoided. In this paper, the standard calculation for determining the maximum acceptable corrosion damage length according to the RSTRENG method is presented using the calculation of the corrosion-damaged structure of the ammonia (NH3) transfer pipeline. After that, the methodological approach to calculation using the finite element method (FEM) is presented in accordance with the methods defined by the new and general approach to standardization and technical harmonization for pressure equipment (Pressure Equipment Directive). The aim of the work was to present advanced modeling techniques of corroded surfaces based on FEM in order to develop a procedure for evaluating the residual strength of steel pipelines in the chemical industry.

AB - In this scientific research, the definition of appropriate neutron shielding
parameters is presented and the results of calculations or measurements of these
parameters are presented for four selected types of concrete that are used in
protection against neutron radiation. A method for calculating the fast neutron
effective removal cross section is considered, which has its own specificities
because it takes into account different types of interactions of fast neutrons with
the materials from which the selected types of concrete are made. In addition, the
values of macroscopic neutron absorption cross section for thermal neutrons,
macroscopic neutron scattering cross section and total macroscopic neutron
attenuation cross section, which includes scattering of fast neutrons and
absorption of thermal neutrons, are presented for the selected types of concrete.
Based on the analysis of neutron shielding parameters, type of concrete with
coarse-fine aggregate limonite-limonite has a higher level of ability to protect
against neutron radiation compared to concrete with coarse-fine aggregate
magnetite-limonite and concrete with barite-barite.

AB - This paper is dedicated to the ductile–brittle transition behaviour of the microalloyed structural steel NIOMOL 490 K. This steel grade is used for welded pressure vessels subjected to dynamic loads and operating at sub-zero temperatures. Therefore, it must have an acceptable toughness. Due to its importance for the safety assessment of pressure vessels, a characterization of this steel was carried out using the Charpy V-notch impact test in the temperature range between - 60 ◦C and + 60 ◦C. The notches were located in parent material, heat affected zone
and weld metal. In this paper, the tensile strength properties at ambient temperature and the nil ductility temperature in the temperature range from - 60 ◦C to + 60 ◦C are presented.

AB - Raw clay samples from Serbia, mainly of kaolinitic, illitic and mixed nature, were
tested for their possible application in the production of ceramics. Using various triaxial
diagrams, the samples were sorted according to their chemical and bulk mineralogical
makeup, and also particle size distribution to determine whether they could be
employed in the production of ceramics and refractories. The areas in the ternary graphs
determined in earlier studies concerning the expected color after firing and the
applicability of the raw clays are checked and extended. The samples' water absorption
and flexural strength were assessed using EN standard procedures after they had been
hydraulically semi-dry pressed and fired at several peak temperatures between 1100
and 1300 °C. A novel triaxial diagram considering the position of the samples based on
firing temperature, water absorption and modulus of rupture is proposed, and the areas
of different kinds of ceramic tiles are defined. It is discovered that the different raw
clays can be utilized to create refractory, as well as wall and floor tiles. This study
supports the rational use of natural sources of raw materials.

AB - The performance of thermo-insulation rendering mortars with alternations in ratios of powdered cordierite and talc was examined. The goal was to confirm that recycled kilnware cordierite can be reapplied in the mortar design without significant deterioration in performance in comparison with OPC mortar. Differential thermal analysis was employed for examining thermally induced reactions. The cavitation erosion, in testing sequences ranging from 30 to 120 minutes, was used to assess the compactness of the mortar structure. The physico-mechanical properties of experimental mortars were investigated. The morphologies of the mortar tablets upon cavitation were studied using a scanning electron microscope. It was established that cordierite and talc filler in amounts up to 20% enhance microstructural packing and mechanical strengths due to improved cementation and therefore contribute to cavitation erosion resistance. Higher amounts of talc cause structural degradation and mass loss during cavitation tests. Reducing manufacturing costs, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions are the main objectives of the production of this waste-based construction composite, as the reuse of waste materials can help achieve a number of Sustainable Development Goals.

AB - Smelting used to be less efficient; therefore, wastes obtained from historical processing at smelter plants usually contain certain quantities of valuable metals. Upon the extraction of useful metal elements, metallurgical slag can be repurposed as an alternative mineral raw material in the building sector. A case study was conducted, which included an investigation of the physico-chemical, mineralogical, and microstructural properties of Pb–Zn slag found at the historic landfill near the Topilnica Veles smelter in North Macedonia. The slag was sampled using drill holes. The mineralogical and microstructural analysis revealed that Pb–Zn slag is a very complex and inhomogeneous alternative raw material with utilizable levels of metals, specifically Pb (2.3 wt.%), Zn (7.1 wt.%), and Ag (27.5 ppm). Crystalline mineral phases of wurtzite, sphalerite, galena, cerussite, akermanite, wüstite, monticellite, franklinite, and zincite were identified in the analyzed samples. The slag’s matrix consisted of alumino-silicates, amorphous silicates, and mixtures of spinel and silicates. Due to the economic potential of Pb, Zn, and Ag extraction, the first stage of reutilization will be to transform metal concentrates into their collective concentrate, from which the maximum amount of these crucial components can be extracted. This procedure will include combination of gravity concentration and separation techniques. The next step is to assess the Pb–Zn slag’s potential applications in civil engineering, based on its mineralogical and physico-mechanical properties. Alumino-silicates present in Pb–Zn slag, which contain high concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, and Fe2O3, are suitable for use in cementitious building composites. The goal of this research is to suggest a solution by which to close the circle of slag’s reutilization in terms of zero waste principles. It is therefore critical to thoroughly investigate the material, the established methods and preparation processes, and the ways of concentrating useful components into commercial products.

AB - The traditional ceramics industry uses large amounts of primary mineral raw materials. Improvements in the production of building materials based on non-metallic minerals can contribute to sustainable development in many ways, such as saving natural resources, using waste materials, reducing energy consumption, decreasing emissions hazardous to the health and the environment, particularly carbon dioxide, and reclamation of mines after exploitation of raw materials, etc. This paper describes the state of application of mineral raw materials and waste in the traditional ceramics industry with a perspective on future challenges. Intensified research is needed to complement the laboratory data and re-scale to the industrial-sized products while improving communication between both sectors.

AB - This study illustrates the utilization of roof tile waste as a resource in the manufacturing of fired bricks. Although commonly referred to as demolition waste, it is technically classifed as construction and demolition waste
(C&D). This demolition waste was used as a partial replacement of two soils (alluvial and laterite soil) at three firing temperatures that were considered economical (700, 850, and 900 ◦C). The waste considered was obtained from roof tiles previously fired at a low temperature below 800 ◦C, thus containing residual carbonates and clay
minerals. The increased waste input resulted in higher firing shrinkage, bulk density, and water absorption while
decreasing loss on ignition. An increase in firing temperature led to higher firing shrinkage, loss on ignition, and
bulk density, but lower water absorption. The bricks met both Indian and ASTM standards for 2nd and 3rd class
by adding 20–35 wt% of roof tile waste and firing at 850–900 ◦C in laboratory and industrial settings. The
minimum acceptable quality for the produced bricks was achieved with an addition of 35 wt% waste, resulting in
a water absorption of approximately 19% and a compressive strength ranging from 6 to 9 MPa. The study suggests that incorporating waste from demolished roof tiles into the production of burned bricks can be advantageous.
It can partially replace the need for soils, reduce natural resource usage, lower energy consumption
during production, and decrease the carbon footprint.
